Banner Admin Connectivity Issues for 4/8/13

Currently, some users are experiencing intermittent connection issues when using Banner Admin. CaTS is aware of this situation and is working with the software vendor on a resolution. Later this evening, we will be restarting the Banner Admin service in hopes of restoring full connectivity. CaTS will notify the university when the system is fully operational.

Calendar Permissions: Letting Others See Your Calendar

If you would like others to see your calendar, CaTS recommends that you set permissions for those users instead of using the "Share Your Calendar" option available in Outlook and Outlook Web App (OWA). Using the "Share Your Calendar" feature will cause unexpected permissions changes to any that you have already set.

Best Practices for Calendar Permissions

After setting calendar permissions for someone to view your calendar, you should always let them know via email or phone that you have set those permissions for them. That person will then need to open your calendar using the instructions outlined on the following pages:

Turn Off Junk Email Filtering in Outlook and Outlook Web App (OWA)

CaTS continues to work on minimizing the amount of valid e-mail which is being sent to your "Junk E-Mail" folder. If this is a problem for you, this feature can be safely turned off so that all messages are delivered to your inbox. The university is continuing to use the Proofpoint antispam/antivirus services which accurately identifies and quarantines actual spam before it gets to the Microsoft mail servers.

The following procedures can be used to turn off Junk E-Mail filtering within RaiderMail. Note that if you use an email client other than Outlook Web App (OWA) or Microsoft Outlook, please use the instructions outlined below for "Outlook Web App (OWA)".

Outlook Web App (OWA)

1.Log in to Outlook Web App.
2.In the top right corner, click on Options then See All Options...
3.Click Block or Allow on the left side menu.
4.Choose the option for Don't move e-mail to my Junk E-Mail folder.
5.Click Save in the bottom right corner.

Outlook 2010

1.Open Outlook 2010.
2.Click the Home tab if not already selected.
3.In the Delete subgroup, click the Junk' drop down menu.
4.Choose Junk E-mail Options...
5.Choose the option for No Automatic Filtering.
6.Click OK.

Outlook 2011

1.Open Outlook 2011.
2.From the Home tab, select the Junk button.
3.Choose Junk E-mail Protection... from the drop down menu.
4.In the Junk E-mail Options window, the Level Tab is selected by default. Select the No Automatic Filtering radio button under this tab.
5.Click the OK button.

Your Security Questions

CaTS recommends that you setup a security question for your RaiderMail account. This will allow to more easily access your account if you forget your password. Here's how to do so.

1.Log in to Outlook Web App.
2.In the top right corner, click on Options then See All Options...
3.On the left side menu, click on Account.
4.On the right, click on Change your password. A new window will appear.
5.Under the Password and security info section, click the link for Edit security info.
6.Under the Security question area, create your security question.
7.Click the Save button.

Best Practices for Security Questions

When setting up your security questions in Outlook Web App, you should also add a phone number and alternate email address (accessible from the security info page). These options will also aid in retrieving a forgotten password.

Turn Off the Conversation View

In both Outlook Web App and the Outlook email program, conversation view is the complete chain of email messages from the first message through all responses. This has also been referred to as a thread. Some our our clients have called the Help Desk to tell us they have missing messages. Usually, this is because Conversation View is turned on, which groups all replies to a message together. If you don't like the conversation view, you can turn it off so that all messages are displayed separately. Here's how to do so for Outlook Web App , Outlook 2010, and Outlook 2011.

Outlook Web App (OWA)

1.After logging in to Outlook Web App, look for the View drop-down menu, located just above the list of your emails.
2.Click View, then look for the Group by Conversations section.
3.Uncheck the option for Use Conversations. This will disable conversation view for the folder you are currently viewing.
4.You must perform these steps for each email folder you have.

Outlook 2010

1.Open Outlook 2010.
2.Click the View tab.
3.In the Conversations subgroup, uncheck the box for Show as Conversations.
4.Choose whether to turn it off for all folders, or just the folder that you are currently using.

Outlook 2011

1.Open Outlook 2011.
2.Click Organize.
3.Click on the Conversation icon. This button is a toggle, so clicking it once will DISABLE conversations since they are enabled by default

Urgent: Phishing Scam Notice-March 28, 2013

Faculty, Staff, and Students,
The Help Desk was recently notified of yet another phishing scam email that targets students, faculty, and staff of Wright State University. The message tells the reader that their Chase Bank account has been locked due to multiple logins from a fraudulent device. The reader is then instructed to click the link in the email to correct their account. Once clicked, a page comes up asking for a username and password.

Please note that this message is a scam and not an official notice from Chase Bank. DO NOT fall victim to this scam by clicking the link or entering your log in information.

Remember, banks or financial institutions will NEVER ask you for your account information via email or the web. If you receive a suspicious message asking for this information, report it to CaTS immediately. You can contact us by phone at (937) 775-4827, or send us an email at

Atomic Learning Update

CaTS would like to inform you about an update we made recently to the Atomic Learning system. This update was done to enhance the simplicity and security of the login process. You can read more about it below. If you are unfamiliar with Atomic Learning, please read the brief “What is Atomic Learning?” section shown below.


Atomic Learning gives you access to a huge library of technology training videos. You can find everything from Microsoft Office to Adobe products, and new training is always being added.


Previously, when you clicked on the link to access Atomic Learning, a window would pop up asking for your campus username and password. When you click on that link now, a new webpage titled “Central Authentication Service” will appear. You can use this webpage to log in to Atomic Learning. Simply enter your campus username and password, just as you did before.

This change has not affected your Atomic Learning account in any way, and all of your previous viewing history is still available. If you notice that this is not the case, or, if you have any other questions related to Atomic Learning, please contact the CaTS Help Desk at (937) 775-4827.


If you haven’t used Atomic Learning before, now is a great time to try it out! To access Atomic Learning, visit the CaTS Online Tutorials page and click on the “Atomic Learning for Wright State University” link. You’ll be taken to the “Central Authentication Service” login page. Enter you campus username and password to access the system.

Network Connectivity Issues for 3/19/13

Important Java Update Information

Recently, a serious security risk was detected in Java version 7, which is currently in use on WSU computers. To mitigate this risk, an update to Java is necessary. Below, you’ll find information on how to update Java for both Windows and Macintosh. Please contact the CaTS Help Desk at (937) 775-4827 if you have any questions or encounter any problems after the upgrade.


On Wednesday, March 13, CaTS will be deploying an updated version of Java to university-owned Microsoft Windows computers on the campus network. You do not need to do anything to receive this update. If you are a Banner Admin user, please see the note below.

Note: After the update, Banner Admin users will no longer be able to tab from the username field to the password field when logging in to the system. In order to do so, the user must click directly into the password field before typing. The vendor for Banner Admin is aware of this issue and is working on a resolution.

Banner Admin users may also be presented with a confirmation box during the first login after receiving this update. These users should choose "Run with the latest version" to continue opening Banner Admin. Click the link below to see a screenshot of this box.


CaTS is unable to automatically deploy the Java update to Macintosh users. Most Mac users should receive this Java update if they use Apple Software Update on a regular basis. Below you’ll find a list of Mac OS X versions, along with information on how to update to the latest version of Java.

- OS X 10.6.8, 10.7.1 through 10.7.2 – The Java update is available through Apple Software Update. NOTE: This will be an update to Java 6.
- OS X 10.7.3 – 10.7.x – The Java 7 update must be manually installed through the website.
- OS X 10.8.x – The Java update must be manually installed through the website. Please note that Banner Admin is not supported with OS X 10.8 and higher at this time.
