Security Reminder: Fake Job Offers

Thursday, February 2, 2017

Recently Wright State students have been the target of email scams containing fake job offers. Below are tips to help recognize these phishing attempts:

  • If an email is difficult to read (poor grammar or wording), it is most likely a scam.
  • If a job offer seems too good to be true, it most likely is.
  • Never accept a job that requires you to deposit checks into your own account, or wire a portion of money from your account.
  • Read any career offer carefully.
  • Banks, credit unions, and other financial institutions will never ask for your account information in an email.
  • If you think you have been a target of a phishing scam, file a report with the FBI's Internet Crime Complaint center here: https://www.ic3.gov/default.aspx

Important Email Fraud Information

Friday, July 8, 2016

The Help Desk recently learned that some Wright State faculty, staff, and students are receiving notifications of fraudulent emails. Users are receiving malicious emails originating from forged  'wright.edu’ addresses. The sender and receiver addresses are the same, so it appears in your inbox as if you are receiving an email from your own Office 365 email address.

Email malware and phishing scams have increased over the past week and are targeting all Wright State members. Please be aware of these scams. Do not open any documents attached to a suspicious email or give out any personal information.

If you have any questions or receive a suspicious email, please contact the CaTS Help Desk immediately. You can reach us at (937) 775-4827, or email helpdesk@wright.edu.

Enhancements to University's Email Spam Service

Tuesday, April 19, 2016

Beginning Thursday, April 21, CaTS will be using Proofpoint's Targeted Attack Protection (TAP) service to help protect against specific threats that are distributed via email, including phishing and targeted attacks. These threats originate from malicious web sites which are triggered when users click on links in an email.

When a link in an email is clicked, TAP scans that URL. If the link is safe, the user will be taken to the original website. If the link is malicious, the user will see a page in the browser letting them know the site has been blocked.

TAP is being implemented as an enhancement to our existing spam filtering service. For more information about TAP, visit https://www.wright.edu/information-technology/security/targeted-attack-p....

For further questions about TAP, contact the CaTS Help Desk at (937) 775-4827, or email helpdesk@wright.edu.
