Symantec Advises Users to Turn Off pcAnywhere in Hack Aftermath

Symantec has advised customers to take their copies of pcAnywhere offline as the company continues to struggle with the aftermath of a major data breach. The company issued a whitepaper addressing new vulnerabilities in its remote access tool that were exploited by a recently publicized attack which allowed attackers to gain access to the application’s source code. The 2006 hack was recently brought to light by an Indian hacking team that is seeking to publicly distribute the code. Symantec has now determined a major update is necessary to protect users from any flaws revealed in the compromised source code. The company is advising users of pcAnywhere 12.5 to disable the remote management tool until an update is released. If users do not take their copies of the tool offline, the company warned attackers could possibly compromise systems and perform “man-in-the-middle” attacks that could result in the theft of user credentials and other network traffic.

Attention Faculty: Information Concerning RaiderMail and Network Drives

As a faculty member, you may have recently heard of the changes CaTS has made for student email and file storage. Some faculty members have questioned whether they, too, would have to make these same changes. As faculty and staff, you can continue using your email as you’ve always done, and you are still going to have access to your personal H:\ drive and departmental K:\ drive to store your files. Note, however, that CaTS is currently discussing faculty/staff email options with the Faculty IT Committee. You will be notified of this information as it becomes available.

Please be aware that you may hear students talking about RaiderMail and the removal of the H:\ drive, or you may see signs posted in campus computer labs mentioning these changes. Rest assured that you will not lose access to your personal or departmental files (H:\ and K:\ drive).

Introducing Raider Commons: A New Service for WSU Faculty, Staff, and Students

*Raider Commons Now Available to the Campus Community*


At the direction of the Provost, CaTS and Communications & Marketing, working in conjunction with Student Government, were asked to investigate an internal online social community to serve as a welcoming "gathering place" for faculty, staff, and students to openly communicate and collaborate on issues. Currently called Raider Commons, this environment enables people to opt-in to focused discussions on topics of personal interest.

Over the past several months, Raider Commons has been beta tested by faculty, staff, and students. A subset of this group comprised an Advisory Committee to offer recommendations and feedback. With key issues now resolved, we'd like to invite the campus community to participate in an evaluation of Raider Commons by using your CAMPUS user name and password to access http://commons.wright.edu.

Some of what you will find in Raider Commons includes:
•A site organized into organic groups covering topics of Politics & World Affairs, Campus Issues, Cultural Events, Recommendations, and more.
•Individual groups with opportunities for members to use familiar social networking tools to create blogs, wikis, documents, polls, calendar events, or simply converse on a Shout wall.
•The Our Commons group – designed to be a community repository of documentation, FAQs, and discussions related to the use of Raider Commons.
•The opportunity to create your own group. Please note: policies regarding removal of persistently inactive groups will apply.


When you first enter Raider Commons, it can be challenging to know where to begin. Start by simply browsing and follow discussion posts in groups of interest to you. If you wish to participate, join and try contributing to one of the existing groups. Add a blog entry or discussion topic. If you are curious about the difference, read the wiki post in the Our Commons group titled "Understanding Content Types - wiki, blog, shout, or discuss?"

*Passwords Now Case Sensitive*


As a result of the recent transition from Novell Directory Services to Microsoft Active Directory, the password for your campus “w” account is now case sensitive. For instance, if you capitalize a letter in your password when changing it, you must remember to always capitalize that letter when typing in your password.


*Passwords on Mobile Devices*


Please remember to change your stored password on your mobile device after you change your password. If you don’t do this, the mobile device will continue trying to use your old password, and could cause a lockout on your account. If you have questions or need assistance with passwords, please contact the Help Desk at (937) 775-4827.


*Access to Your Files*


Do you store files on your personal campus H:\ drive, or do you use the My Documents folder in on-campus labs to store your files? If so, CaTS has an important announcement for you. Computers in CaTS Labs no longer use your campus H:\ drive as the default location to save your files. Previously, when you chose to save a file, that file was automatically saved to your H:\ drive unless you chose another storage option. Now, the default save location will be the lab computer’s hard drive. If choose this location to save your files, they will be automatically deleted once that computer is restarted.

***To make sure you don’t lose your files, you should always save them to another storage device, such as a flash drive, external hard drive, or your SkyDrive (available through RaiderMail).***

Also keep in mind that beginning March 1, 2012, access to your campus H:\ drive will no longer be available. If you have any files stored on this drive, you will need to copy them to another device or location, such as a flash drive or external hard drive. But you may also want to try out Skydrive, Microsoft’s online cloud storage solution.

As a WSU student, you get your own 25 GB SkyDrive after you sign up for RaiderMail, WSU’s new email service for students. Fall Quarter Update for Faculty

1) Important Announcement: Overhead Projectors with Acetate Rolls To Be Removed From Classrooms


During the past two quarters, a Classroom Equipment Preferences Form has been available for instructors to submit to CaTS any teaching and equipment preferences they have for their classroom. With the success of this form, CaTS has learned that the need for overhead projectors with acetate rolls has dropped significantly. In response to this low demand, overhead projectors with acetate rolls will be removed from all classrooms beginning winter quarter 2012.

For those instructors who still need this equipment for their classrooms, please add the “Transparency/Overhead Projector” option to your equipment preferences list using the Classroom Equipment Preferences Form, which can be found at https://support.wright.edu/instructorprefs/.

2) Table Top Podium Added to Classroom Equipment Preferences Form


Table top podiums for use in the classroom have been recently added to the Classroom Equipment Preferences Form. The table top podium is the moveable podium already located in some of the university’s classrooms. If you would like to have a table top podium in your classroom, you will need to log in to the Classroom Equipment Preferences Form (linked in the previous announcement) and add the podium to your list of classroom preferences. Please note that if you have filled out this form before, all of your previous preferences were saved, and you will only need to add the podium to your list.

3) Reminder: Important Information About Lab Shared Area (N:\Drive)


With the transition from Novell to Active Directory nearly complete, CaTS would like to let you know about a change that will affect how you share files with your students. Currently, instructors can use the Novell N:\ drive, also known as the lab shared area, to store files that students can access.

If you are using the lab shared area, please be aware that after fall quarter ends, this area will no longer be available. Going forward, faculty and student collaboration will be facilitated through Pilot. Pilot offers the ability to share content with your students in an easy, user-friendly manner.

CaTS and CTL would like to help make this transition to Pilot as easy as possible. If you have instructional material located within this lab share area or you plan to move forward using Pilot, please contact the CaTS Help Desk at (937) 775-4827 or send an email to helpdesk@wright.edu to add your name to a list of interested faculty.

4) Clocks Now Being Installed in Classrooms


You asked for it, you got it! Due to high demand from WSU faculty, clocks are now being installed in all university classrooms and computer labs. While the process is still on-going, all classrooms will have a clock by the beginning of winter quarter.

5) Information on RaiderMail, WSU’s New Email Service for Students


Wright State University recently launched RaiderMail, a brand new student email system. RaiderMail, which is built on the Microsoft Live@edu services, gives students a 10 GB inbox, the ability to collaborate on class and club projects, have remote access to documents, and more.

Although faculty and staff do not currently have accounts on RaiderMail, we’d still like you to be aware that you may hear students talking about the new email service, and that any emails you receive from them will come via this new system. Please note, though, that this will not affect your email inbox or change how you communicate through email with your students.

You may have also heard that the H:\ and K:\ drives (network storage drives) for students are going away soon. Students will lose this access in March of 2012, and will have to use another method of file storage such as SkyDrive (provided with their RaiderMail account) to store data. PLEASE NOTE that this change does not affect your H:\ and K:\ drives. You will continue to have access to these network drives.

6) PC Encryption


If a university-owned computer is lost or stolen, and if that computer is storing legally protected sensitive data (social security numbers, credit card information, grades, transcripts, etc.), the university may be held liable for this loss. To combat this situation, CaTS is now installing a software program called CheckPoint Full Disk Encryption on new university-owned laptops.

This software stores data in an unreadable format unless the proper credentials are provided. By using this software, the university can track which computers have been encrypted and can help avoid potential legal and financial risk.

CheckPoint Full Disk Encryption will be licensed when you purchase a new laptop from Pomeroy starting 10/1/11. Because of the network resources required, the software will be installed by CaTS Desktop Services.

Please be aware that at this time, CaTS is initially focusing on new Windows-based laptops for this project. This same software will be available soon for Mac laptops.

Attention Faculty: Enhancements to Electronic Classrooms

CaTS would like to make you aware of some of the changes you will see to electronic classrooms this fall quarter. If you have questions about any of these items, please contact the CaTS Help Desk at (937) 775-4827 or 1-888-775-4827.

1) Classroom Video Projectors MUTE Button Timeout Function


CaTS wants to remind all instructors that most video projectors located in electronic classrooms have a button called MUTE that, when pressed, hides what is displayed on the instructor’s computer from the rest of the class. In many cases, this MUTE button functionality is set to timeout after 24 minutes, meaning after that time period has elapsed, the image currently shown on the instructor’s computer will reappear on the classroom video projector screen.

Further instructions on using the MUTE button are available on Quick Start Guides placed near the instructor station in these classrooms. Please note: some electronic classrooms do not have the 24 minute timeout function enabled. After pressing the MUTE button, the image will not reappear until the instructor manually presses the button again. Quick Start Guides located in these classrooms will tell you whether or the timeout function is enabled.

2) ELMO Document Cameras


ELMO document cameras give an instructor the ability to project and display any type of printed document onto the wall of their classroom. Unlike traditional overhead projectors, clear acetate film is not required, and the ELMO document camera is much smaller and provides better functionality and flexibility to the user. The CaTS Classroom Technology Support office has installed some of these document cameras onto teaching stations in several university classrooms. Instructions on using document cameras are attached to the product itself in these classrooms.

To see if your assigned classroom for fall quarter is equipped with an ELMO document camera, please contact CTS at x3162. If it is not, an order can be placed at that time for an ELMO to be delivered to your classroom on as-needed basis.

3) Mac Mini Workstations Now Installed in Electronic Classrooms


Many of the university’s Registrar-scheduled electronic classrooms at one time had both Windows and Macintosh computers at the instructor station. All of these classrooms have now been upgraded to a single Mac Mini workstation that is capable of running both Windows 7 and Macintosh OS X. These workstations have been mounted on the top of the podium and when powered up or restarted will present the user with an operating system selection screen (Windows or Macintosh). A keyboard has been installed with these new workstations that provide both Windows and Macintosh-specific keys. There are also additional USB extension cables provided with the workstations which will allow for the connection of devices such as external hard drives, cameras and scanners. It is recommended (but not required) that users attach USB devices to these extension cables for optimal performance of the device.

4) Windows 7 & Active Directory in the Electronic Classrooms


For fall quarter 2011, CaTS has deployed both Windows 7 Service Pack 1 and the Active Directory file system to all CaTS-managed public computing areas and electronic classrooms. You’ll likely notice a few changes to where software is located. The Start Menu structure has changed to show the default installation folders, groups and icons of applications that are installed automatically with Windows. Wright State specific software will now be listed in a special group at the top of the All Programs menu. For more information, review the “Electronic Classroom Quick Start Guide” located near the podium in your assigned classroom. CaTS greatly appreciates the support and cooperation of our users as we begin to use this new technology, and welcome any feedback you can provide.

Important Information Concerning the MyFiles Website

Beginning August 2, 2011, the MyFiles website will no longer be available. Currently, MyFiles allows you to access the files you have stored on your personal WSU network drive (H:\) from any computer with an Internet connection.

After August 2, all users wishing to access their H:\ files from off-campus must use the university’s VPN connection. This connection allows authorized users to securely connect to the WSU data network to access their files. In order to use the connection you will be required to install the VPN software on your computer and use it to connect to your files.

For instructions on how to download, install, and use the VPN client, please visit the following website: The VPN Website. You will need to click on the link for “AnyConnect VPN Registration” to start the process.

After downloading and installing the software, re-visit the above listed website and click on the “Accessing Your Files from Home” link under the “Existing AnyConnect VPN Users” section.

1) Active Directory Transition


In the summer of 2010, CaTS began transitioning the university’s file storage and printing network infrastructure from Novell Directory Services to Microsoft Active Directory. Novell is the system on campus that is used to give you access to your personal and departmental files on network drives such as your H:\ and K:\ (also called users and shared on a Mac), as well as access to network printers. Active Directory will provide this same functionality.

This new infrastructure will give CaTS the ability to meet future needs and expectations of our users by providing them with better system functionality and tools to conduct their daily operations.

If you haven’t already, you’ll be hearing more about Active Directory shortly through more email reminders or department demonstrations. If you are invited to attend a departmental demonstration concerning Active Directory, we highly recommend that you attend, as it provides essential information to help make the transition smoother for you. 3) Transition from McAfee Anti-virus to Microsoft Forefront


In early April 2011, CaTS begin phasing out the use of the McAfee Anti-virus software in use on all university Windows-based computers, and began making a transition to Microsoft Forefront Security software. During this transition, all university-owned Windows-based computers will automatically receive the Microsoft Forefront software over the campus network, while the McAfee Anti-virus software will be automatically removed.

For faculty and staff with home computers, CaTS now offers the Windows version of Microsoft Security Essentials software free of charge, which includes anti-virus protection. This software can be downloaded on the CaTS Anti-virus website, located at Anti-virus Software.

Please note: You MUST uninstall any anti-virus software (such as McAfee) that is currently installed on your home computer in order to successfully install the Microsoft Security Essentials software.
