Wright State’s Industrial and Human Factors Engineering program named one of best online graduate programs by U.S. News

Three Raj Soin College of Business programs are also recognized in new U.S. News rankings
Feb 07, 2024

U.S. News & World Report has named Wright State University’s online graduate programs in engineering and business as among the best in the nation for 2024.

The Master of Science in Industrial and Human Factors Engineering, offered by Wright State’s College of Engineering and Computer Science, was ranked 37th out of 108 programs nationally, up from 42nd last year. It was also the second-highest-ranked online graduate engineering program in Ohio.

U.S. News & World Report based its rankings on instructor engagement with students, student excellence, student services and technology, peer assessments, and faculty credentials and training. Scores were calculated using data that the programs reported to U.S. News in a statistical survey and from data collected in a separate peer reputation survey.

Wright State’s Master of Science in Industrial and Human Factors Engineering program was ranked No. 2 overall in the student engagement category, a recognition that faculty members provide students with worthwhile opportunities to interact with their instructors and classmates and create a rewarding educational experience for students.

The program was also ranked No. 6 in student excellence, recognizing that graduates have received the skills and training to excel when they enter the workforce.

“We are excited to be among the top 50 ranks consistently for the past eight years,” said Subhashini Ganapathy, Ph.D., professor and chair of the Department of Biomedical, Industrial and Human Factors Engineering. “The opportunities and flexibility we provide to our students makes it a sought-after option to both in-state and out-of-state students. We have excellent faculty and staff who strive to support our students and provide a high-quality program. Our ranking of No. 2 in engagement and No. 6 in student excellence captures that sentiment.”

Wright State’s Master of Sciences in Industrial and Human Factors Engineering is a highly customizable degree that can be completed entirely or partially online through distance-learning courses.

Students work with a faculty advisor to plan a custom course of study in one of several areas, including:

  • Logistics and supply chain, which provides students with a background in systems-based modeling, manufacturing design, and continuous improvement, while emphasizing inventory theory, forecasting, warehousing and network design
  • Human factors and ergonomics, which provides students with a foundational understanding of usability, interface design, systems modeling and human performance
  • Data science, which provides students with a foundation in the design of artificial intelligence systems and visualization of data while emphasizing artificial intelligence and machine learning applications, health care and retail analytics

Research opportunities are also available to students in supply chain and logistics; data science; human factors, ergonomics and user experience; and neuroengineering.

The program prepares working professionals with skills to effectively design and operate a variety of systems in such fields as health care, manufacturing, aerospace, distribution and retail.

Industrial engineers utilize the tools of simulation, optimization, computing and statistics to design and improve modern technology-laden systems. Human factors engineers design systems that effectively integrate human abilities and limitations with machines and tools.

Many of the program’s graduates work as process, manufacturing and quality engineers; usability and user-experience professionals; and operations, management, data and business analysts.

Graduates are employed by Wright-Patterson Air Force Base, Kroger, Google, Honda, Aptima, Cardinal Health, Siemens, LexisNexis, General Electric, Boeing and others.

Three Raj Soin College of Business graduate programs ranked

U.S. News also ranked several online graduate programs offered by Wright State’s Raj Soin College of Business.

The Master of Information Systems and the Master of Science in Logistics and Supply Chain Management were ranked 77th out of 213 programs nationally and tied for the second-highest-ranked program in Ohio in U.S. News’ Best Online Master’s in Business Programs rankings.

Both degree programs offer a blended education approach featuring on-campus residencies and proprietary e-learning modules prepared by experts in their fields.

The programs focus on a problem-solving approach to information management, logistics and supply chain management, using real-life experiences, case materials and simulations.

Wright State’s Master of Business Administration was ranked 137th overall and 95th in the Best MBA Online Programs for Veterans category.

“The Raj Soin College of Business is excited with these MBA rankings because they show our dedication to the students that we serve and, in particular, for those who have served our country by providing a flexible academic environment and ensuring they get their full financial benefits from the Veterans Administration,” said Donald Hopkins, interim dean of the Raj Soin College of Business.

The MBA program offers students to take classes full- or part-time and online, in-person or a combination of both. Students can complete the program regardless of their geographic location and at their own pace, from one year for those who attend full-time to a maximum of five years.

All core courses are offered online every semester. Online courses are taught by the same award-winning faculty members who teach classes on campus.

Wright State’s MBA program was also recognized for offering veterans and active-duty service members distance learning opportunities that are affordable, accessible and reputable.

Wright State University, located next to Wright-Patterson Air Force Base, is recognized for providing a welcoming campus for veterans and other military-connected students and its support of military initiatives in the Dayton region.

Princeton Review ranks Wright State top 50 nationally for entrepreneurship studies

Nov 16, 2023

The Princeton Review has named Wright State University’s Raj Soin College of Business as one of the nation’s top graduate programs for aspiring entrepreneurs, ranking it 43rd nationally, the top program in Ohio and eighth in the Midwest in 2024.

The ranking is based on a survey of administrators at nearly 300 schools offering entrepreneurship studies. The survey, which contained more than 60 questions, was analyzed using over 40 survey data points to select the schools and tally their rankings.

Wright State’s ranking was based on its Master of Business Administration and its new venture creation concentration.

“This ranking by Princeton Review reflects the growing commitment to entrepreneurship at Wright State, with programs offering experiential, real-world courses in which students create their own new venture business plans and also assist current companies with their plans,” said Kendall Goodrich, Ph.D., professor and chair of marketing.

The new venture creation MBA concentration features advanced topics in innovation and entrepreneurship to help increase skills and further career goals. It focuses on the economics of innovation, including the technological change, economic growth, globalization and long-wave cycles that affect innovation in business and organizations. It also offers courses on technology-based ventures and entrepreneurship.

At the undergraduate level, the Raj Soin College of Business offers a Bachelor of Science in Business, entrepreneurship major, and an entrepreneurship minor.

The Princeton Review is a leading tutoring, test prep and college admission services company.

Wright State named a 2023 Best for Vets campus

Nov 15, 2023

Wright State University was named a 2023 Best for Vets college by Military Times, ranking 212th overall and 37th in the Midwest.

The rankings use student success metrics such as completion, retention, persistence and GPA as the most important factors in determining the relative rankings followed closely by the range of military-specific resources and financial assistance available to students. Admissions and registration policies, human resources and assorted miscellaneous considerations also factor into the scoring rubric.

Wright State serves about 600 veteran and military-connected students per semester.

Seth Gordon, Ph.D., director of the Wright State Veteran and Military Center (VMC), said one of the reasons that Wright State is successful is that the university strives to create an environment that makes student veterans feel like Wright State wants them and that they belong at the university.

“The VMC’s most important function is providing support for student veterans, both guard and reservists, as well as their spouses and dependents using GI Bill benefits or other military educational benefits,” Gordon said. “We also try to create a welcoming atmosphere in our space and provide programming that seeks to connect student veterans to each other as well as other campus resources.”

Wright State also recently received the Military Supporter of the Year Award from the Dayton Business Journal during its 2023 Business of the Year Award ceremony.

Wright State has been recognized for its military-friendly service with a Military Friendly Silver Award from Victory Media, which focuses on working with military publications including the Military Times news organization.

The Ohio Department of Higher Education also named Wright State a Collegiate Purple Star campus for its efforts to create a supportive and inclusive environment for military-connected students.

Gordon encourages faculty and staff to go the extra mile for students. The Veteran and Military Center offers a VMC Student Champion co-curricular certification for students, faculty and staff.

The program incorporates VMC-sponsored training programs with other offices and services to ensure that those who work with veterans have experienced at least 15 hours of training in four areas: exposure to military culture, participation in Green Zone Training that explores mental health issues common among veteran and military-connected students, and completion of Question, Persuade, Refer suicide prevention training and Mental Health First Aid Training.

“Military service can serve as a dramatic catalyst for learning and success in other fields for many student veterans and military-connected students,” Gordon said. “We want our staff, faculty and students to be able to recognize early when any student is experiencing the stress of college and juggling their external responsibilities. Student veterans and military-connected students may experience more issues as a result of their previous or current service. Having a population that respects that service and is trained to appropriately address is invaluable.”

Shannon Hansen, a U.S. Air Force veteran majoring in English with a concentration in professional and technical writing, said Wright State was the obvious choice for her.

“I was worried about fitting in as I am older than the average student,” she said. “Also, with my PTSD challenges, I worried about interacting with so many people. The VMC has helped me through all of that. While the environment is conducive to studying and providing a safe space, it is the people who work there that make it the amazing place it is. They have listened to me vent, helped me through obstacles, encouraged me to be me by accepting me on my level, just as I am, understanding how difficult it is to ask and accept help. Without the support of the VMC, I am not sure I would be able to navigate this next chapter of my life at Wright State.”

Wright State receives Silver Award from Military Friendly

Oct 16, 2023

Wright State University prides itself on its accessibility for students from all walks of life. In 2023, Wright State was once again recognized for its military-friendly service with a Military Friendly Silver Award, up from its 2022 designation, the Bronze Award.

This year, over 1,800 schools participated in the military-friendly survey, and 530 schools received a designation of top 10, gold, silver or bronze.

The Military Friendly designation is sponsored by Viqtory Media, a company that focuses on working with military publications, including the Military Times, which shares news and information about the military.

In 2022, Wright State was also named a Collegiate Purple Star campus by the state of Ohio in recognition of the university’s “excellent job providing a supportive environment for those veterans and service members making the transition to college and the workforce,” said Randy Gardener, chancellor of the Ohio Department of Higher Education. Also last year, Wright State was named a Best for Vets college by Military Times.

Seth Gordon, Ph.D., director of the Veteran and Military Center (VMC), said he is proud of the Silver Award designation from Military Friendly. He said the VMC strives to be flexible and work to accommodate veteran and active-duty students.

“Wright State is always looking for ways to demonstrate our commitment to our student veteran and military-connected students. Our recent dedication of the Captain Shawn L. English VMC Champions Garden was realized through the collective effort of our extended Wright State community and dedicated alumni,” said Gordon.

Gordon encourages faculty and staff to go the extra mile for students. In September, the Veteran and Military Center began offering a VMC Student Champion co-curricular certification for students, faculty and staff.

Inspired by the work of the university’s Mental Health Task Force, this program incorporates VMC-sponsored trainings with other offices and services to ensure that those seeking to work with veterans have experienced at least 15 hours of training in four areas. They include exposure to military culture, participation in a “Green Zone” training that explores a serious aspect of mental health as it relates to veteran and military-connected students, and completion of Question, Persuade, Refer suicide prevention training and Mental Health First Aid training.

Campus partners involved in the VMC Student Champion initiative include the offices of Disability Services, Public Safety and Student Involvement and Leadership.

Wright State also facilitates priority registration for veterans and active-duty students and advocates for veterans and active-duty students to assist in resolving any issues that may arise for students throughout their college career.

Wall Street Journal ranks Wright State one of the top universities in nation, top two among Ohio public universities in value

Oct 03, 2023

According to a new Wall Street Journal/College Pulse national ranking for best value among national colleges and universities, Wright State University is one of the top 400 schools in the nation and No. 2 in the state among Ohio public universities in the value it provides its students.

Universities that performed the best in this ranking kept costs low and put graduates on pathways to valuable careers.

Wright State is proud to be considered one of the top 400 schools in the nation at providing value to its students. In the state, only Ohio State was ranked ahead of Wright State by the Wall Street Journal’s calculation. View the overall rankings.

Guided by research conducted by the public-policy think tank Third Way, the Wall Street Journal’s best-value calculation looked at how quickly a degree from each college paid for its cost through the salary boost it provided its students.

The calculation estimated the net price of a four-year education at each university and compared that to how much higher the median salary of its graduates was 10 years after enrollment than that of high school graduates in its home state. Net price is the average overall cost of attending college for students who received federal financial aid, including tuition and fees, room and board, and books and supplies, taking into account any grants and scholarships.

The best value ranking follows Wright State’s recent national ranking in America’s Best Colleges for 2024 list, which was also conducted by the Wall Street Journal and College Pulse.

The America’s Best Colleges 2024 ranking serves as a guide for prospective students across the nation while recognizing the colleges and universities doing an outstanding job in higher education. The ranking of the top 400 colleges was based on a student and alumni survey and student outcomes metrics.

The student and alumni survey was one of the largest ever independent surveys of college students in the United States. Over 60,000 undergraduate students and recent undergraduate alumni were asked by College Pulse to provide feedback on colleges that are of great value to its students in terms of tuition, learning environment, degree completion and the likelihood of a higher salary after graduation.

Student Outcomes Metrics used a variety of metrics around student outcomes to determine the salary impact compared to similar colleges, the number of years to pay off net price and graduation rates compared to similar colleges. An assessment of the level of diversity on campus was also a part of the analysis.

Future students and their families can explore the Dayton Campus, connect with faculty and current students, and learn why it’s a great time to be a Raider at Wright State University’s next open house.

Raider Open House takes place on Saturday, Oct. 21, in the Student Union. Guests may register to begin their open house experience at 9, 10 or 11 a.m.

Registration information and detailed program schedules are available at wright.edu/raideropenhouse.

Raider Open House is open to any student interested in pursuing a four-year or bachelor’s degree at Wright State.

Wright State ranked among top universities worldwide

May 15, 2023

Wright State University was ranked in the top 6.4% out of 20,531 universities worldwide in the 2023 edition of the outcome-based Global 2000 list by the Center for World University Rankings.

“We are thrilled that the Center for World University Rankings has recognized Wright State and the world-class education it provides,” said Susan Schaurer, vice president for enrollment management and student success. “With one of the most affordable tuition rates in the state, the value of a Wright State degree is well-known to students in the region, throughout the state and, with more than 1,000 international students, increasingly around the globe. We are excited for Wright State’s high-caliber academic programs and student outcomes to be recognized alongside so many notable colleges and universities.”

The Center for World University Rankings publishes the largest academic rankings of global universities. The rankings are unique in that they use objective indicators for four key pillars underlying the ranking methodology. These pillars are education, employability, faculty and research, with no reliance on surveys and university data submissions.

The education pillar is based on the academic success of a university’s alumni and measured by the number of alumni who have won prestigious academic distinctions relative to the university’s size.

Employability refers to the professional success of a university’s alumni and is measured by the number of alumni who have held top positions at major companies relative to the university’s size.

Faculty is measured by the number of faculty members who have won prestigious academic distinctions.

Research relies on a number of factors including research output, which is measured by the total number of research papers; high-quality publications, which is measured by the number of research papers appearing in top-tier journals; influence, measured by the number of research papers appearing in highly influential journals; and citations, measured by the number of highly cited research papers.

Equal emphasis is put on student-related and faculty-related indicators. Sixty-two million outcome-based data points were used in this year’s rankings.

Sometimes a person is simply too shy or uncertain if their work is newsworthy. That uncertainty can cause them to not get the recognition they deserve. If you have a colleague who is deserving of the spotlight, let us know!

Promote Your Students and Alumni

People like to read about those who they can relate to. We’re not always seeking the stories about the valedictorian who has climbed 30 mountains, had 10 internships, and can speak 12 languages (though that would certainly be impressive!). We want to hear about those everyday sparks, the moments and projects that bring the average student up to the next level. Students with interesting real-life experiences that pair unexpectedly with unusual or conflicting majors, or alumni who have found a new way of doing something ordinary or extraordinary.

Lake Campus named a Best Accredited College for associate degree in psychology

Mar 13, 2023

Wright State University’s Lake Campus was named one of the Best Accredited Colleges in 2023 for its Associate of Arts in Psychology.

Best Accredited Colleges rankings are created using a proprietary system that includes data from the U.S. Department of Education and individual program details with a focus on quality and affordability over selective or exclusive programs.

Criteria considered in the rankings include financial aid, alternative tuition plans, tuition cost, retention rates, student-faculty ratio, admittance rates, support and resources, transfer credit programs, loan default rates and graduation rates.

Josh Ricker, Ph.D., an instructor of psychology at the Lake Campus, said multiple aspects of the program played a role in the ranking, including the ability to offer a broad range of psychology courses that give students multiple outlets to determine which area of psychology they would like to pursue.

“We also make a concerted effort to establish relationships with mental health organizations around the community,” Ricker said. “Forging these relationships provides our students with many opportunities for volunteer work, internships and hands-on experience in the field. Being a smaller institution really allows us to focus on our students as individuals and fine tune our actions to fit their needs.”

Dave Hochstein, Ph.D., associate professor of psychology, said Lake Campus’ associate degree in psychology provides students with a foundation for success in both career opportunities and additional educational opportunities.

“Communication and writing skills are critical skills for both,” Hochstein said. “Being able to find relevant research, understand it and turn it into something that is valuable and easy for the general population to understand are also valuable skills for any career or additional higher educational achievements.”

Lake Campus students who receive an associate degree in psychology will be prepared to tackle a variety of fields including the arts, business management, conflict mediation, consulting, counseling and therapy, criminal justice, education, engineering, human resources, government, marketing, the military, public service, rehabilitation, sales, social policy and sports.

U.S. State Department names Wright State a top university for Gilman scholars

Oct 19, 2022

Wright State University was ranked as a top college with Gilman scholars by the U.S. Department of State for 2020-2021, taking first place in the medium-sized college category.

The goal of the Gilman International Scholarship Program is to broaden the U.S. student population that studies and interns abroad by providing scholarships to outstanding undergraduates who, due to financial constraints, might not otherwise participate.

“Wright State University makes it a priority to provide accessible study abroad and international internship opportunities for every student,” said President Sue Edwards, Ph.D. “We are especially proud of the collaborative efforts of our University Center for International Education and Office of Disability Services to expand education abroad experiences for students with disabilities. Wright State’s strong participation in the Gilman Scholarship program is a testament to our students’ desire to enhance their education with life-changing learning experiences around the world.”

Since the program’s establishment in 2001, more than 1,300 U.S. institutions have sent more than 36,000 Gilman scholars to 160 countries around the globe.

“We have had over 30 recipients of the Gilman Scholarship since we began workshops and proactive advising of students in 2018,” said Michelle Streeter-Ferrari, director of the University Center for International Education (UCIE). “This effort has been led by Joy Wanderi, associate director in the University Center for International Education, and executed by our study abroad team. Receiving this top recognition for the years of the COVID-19 pandemic speaks volumes to the resilience of our Wright State students to adapt to changing circumstances and still pursue their dreams of an international education.”

Wanderi said it is important that students know the Gilman Scholarship is available and that UCIE will work with them to help navigate the application process.

“Gilman is an important scholarship and has allowed our Pell-eligible students to experience the world and put them on the map,” she said. “It takes effort and writing winning essays is challenging. However, we work closely with our students to help them showcase their best work. We are super proud of our students.”

Students can learn more about the scholarship and study abroad opportunities at the International Education Fair on Wednesday, Nov. 2, from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. in the Student Union Atrium.

The next deadline to apply for the Gillman Scholarship is March 7, 2023. Interested students should contact the Wright State study abroad team at studyabroad@wright.edu or visit studyabroad.wright.edu to learn more about study abroad opportunities and funding through Gilman and other programs.

Wright State named a Best for Vets campus

Sep 29, 2022

Wright State University was named a 2022 Best for Vets college by Military Times, ranking 194 overall and 35 in the Midwest.

Wright State serves close to 600 veteran and military-connected students per semester.

Seth Gordon, Ph.D., director of the Wright State Veteran and Military Center (VMC), said that one of the reasons that Wright State is successful is that the university strives to create an environment that makes student veterans feel like Wright State wants them and that they belong here.

Shannon Hansen, a U.S. Air Force veteran majoring in English with a concentration in professional and technical writing, said that Wright State was the obvious choice for her.

“I was worried about fitting in as I am older than the average student. Also, with my PTSD challenges, I worried about interacting with so many people. The VMC has helped me through all of that,” Hansen said. “While the environment is conducive to studying and providing a safe space, it is the people who work there that make it the amazing place it is. They have listened to me vent, helped me through obstacles, encouraged me to be me by accepting me on my level, just as I am, understanding how difficult it is to ask and accept help. Without the support of the VMC, I am not sure I would be able to navigate this next chapter of my life at Wright State.”

Arden Reimer, a U.S. Marine Corps veteran majoring in photography and minoring in history, said the VMC is an excellent resource.

“It can be a quiet space for study, a collaborative space for those looking for somewhere to meet and a place to bond during the frequent events,” Reimer said. “It provides an opportunity for veterans to get to know those who can help resolve any sort of veteran-specific issues at Wright State.”

Wright State has also been recognized for its military-friendly service with a Military Friendly Bronze Award, from Victory Media, which focuses on working with military publications including the Military Times news organization.

The Ohio Department of Higher Education also named Wright State a Collegiate Purple Star campus for its efforts to create a supportive and inclusive environment for military-connected students.

Wright State honored by State of Ohio for its support for military-connected students

May 26, 2022

Wright State University was named a Collegiate Purple Star campus, a new designation established by the Ohio Department of Higher Education to recognize Ohio colleges and universities for their efforts to support students with military backgrounds.

The first group of Collegiate Purple Star campuses was announced on May 26 by Randy Gardner, chancellor of the Ohio Department of Higher Education.

“The Veteran and Military Center at Wright State has done an excellent job providing a supportive environment for those veterans and service members making the transition to college and the workforce,” Gardner said. “Wright State is a very deserving recipient of the Collegiate Purple Star designation.”

Wright State President Sue Edwards, Ph.D., said, “Wright State is extremely honored to be among the first Universities in Ohio to achieve the Purple Star Designation. It highlights our steadfast commitment to support our brave active-duty military members, veterans, and their families. As a public institution of higher education, it is not only our duty but our honor to ensure those that served our great nation have access to quality educational opportunities that meets their educational needs.”

Ohio public and independent colleges and universities are recognized as Collegiate Purple Star campuses for offering military-connected students a supportive and inclusive community.

The awards advance the work started by Ohio’s PreK–12 school system to create a Purple Star designation for military-friendly schools. Ohio is the first state in the nation to offer these designations, the Ohio Department of Higher Education said.

Seth Gordon, Ph.D., director of Wright State’s Veteran and Military Center, said, “This designation exists, in part, because of the work that Amanda Watkins did as the associate director of the VMC and the co-chair of the Ohio Veterans Education Council several years ago. Her attention to detail permeates our application’s ability to meet the requirements in terms of policy, procedures and digital infrastructure.”

Gordon said the application process for the Collegiate Purple Star program required him to take a closer look at some items he had never explored in detail.

The Veteran and Military Center provides a welcoming space on campus for veteran and military-connected students where they can relax and study together.

“It made me realize that the support for student veterans and military-connected students is campus-wide — and we all need to celebrate this achievement because we earned it together,” he said.

Wright State has long been recognized as a welcoming campus for veterans and other military-connected students.

The university served about 700 veterans and military-connected students, including those on active duty and serving in the National Guard and Reserve, during the 2021–22 academic year. The university offers an array of resources to help those students on campus.

The Veteran and Military Center is a 4,500-square-foot area in Allyn Hall that provides a welcoming space on campus for veteran and military-connected students where they can relax and study together and helps them feel like they belong at Wright State. The VMC is designed to efficiently provide support services for veteran and military-connected students.

“Our overarching goal is to meet the needs of military-connected students and make sure they feel satisfied and supportive,” Gordon said. “The VMC contributes to a feeling of belonging by creating an environment of trust and connectedness for our students. We want to be genuinely military friendly in both designation and deed.”

The center advocates for veterans and active-duty students and assists them with issues that may arise for students during their time at Wright State.

Wright State supports students interested in careers as officers in the military through the Army ROTC Raider Battalion and Air Force ROTC Detachment 643.

The university delivers high-quality career service counseling and helps veterans connect with other students through campus events and activities, student organizations and through the VMC.

The university facilitates priority registration for all veterans and military-connected service members, including active-duty students and those in the National Guard and Reserves.

Wright State awards education credits for military training and experience from all branches of the U.S. military.

Wright State supports students interested in careers as officers in the military through the Army ROTC Raider Battalion and Air Force ROTC Detachment 643.

In recent years, Wright State’s Veteran and Military Alumni Society has increased its activities by sponsoring a welcome back to campus mixer and organizing fundraising events and career events for recent alumni.

School of Nursing, Kinesiology, and Health Sciences ranked No. 3 among NursingProcess.org’s 10 Best Accredited Nursing Schools in Ohio

May 09, 2022

Wright State’s School of Nursing, Kinesiology, and Health Sciences ranked No. 3 among NursingProcess.org’s 10 Best Accredited Nursing Schools in Ohio for 2022, putting it ahead of schools such as Kent State University, Ohio University and Case Western Reserve University.

Nursing.Process.org said Wright State’s nursing program delivers a well-rounded nursing education where what students are taught in classroom lectures is reinforced by labs and other experiential learning opportunities.

“Though the college’s main focus is upon satisfying the critical need for nurses in the Buckeye State, the education you receive here will prepare you for any health care setting you choose to work in,” it said. “The traditional nursing curriculum is enlivened by unique electives like a disaster preparedness class and a course called The Power of Nursing, which helps student nurses explore the personal significance of their work.”

The group said practically any imaginable patient scenario can be reenacted in the college’s Simulation Lab, which resembles a hospital unit with functioning equipment and high-fidelity manikins.

“Students learn specific skills such as IV insertion and blood draws by practicing on lifelike task trainers,” it said. “Clinical rotation sites include Atrium Medical Center, Miami Valley Hospital, Kettering Medical Center and other health care facilities throughout the greater Dayton metropolitan area.”

Nursing.Process.org helps potential nursing students simplify their search for nursing institutions of higher education by giving them access to nursing and career information.

The group evaluated all nursing schools approved by their state board of nursing and then ranked the schools based on indicators considered important in defining a nursing student’s preparedness for success in personal and professional life. The group measured academic quality, including the acceptance, graduation, and retention rates as well as student-to-faculty ratio. It also looked at performance on the National Council Licensure Examination.

In addition, the group reviewed college rankings, ratings and student reviews sourced from various publications including U.S. News & World Report. Additional information was gathered from the schools’ websites.

Wright State’s baccalaureate and master’s degrees in nursing are accredited by the Commission of Collegiate Nursing Education. The pre-licensure programs have full approval from the Ohio Board of Nursing.

Boonshoft School of Medicine tops in diversity in Ohio

Apr 21, 2022

When it comes to diversity, the Wright State University Boonshoft School of Medicine is the best in Ohio and the 13th best in the nation among 125 similar schools, based on rankings 2022 by U.S. News and World Report.

U.S. News ranked each medical school based on the percentage of its fall 2021 total enrollment as reported to U.S. News of students from underrepresented minority populations and how that percentage compares with state and national race-ethnic-group proportions.

“At BSOM, our mission is to create the physician workforce of the future,” said Valerie Weber, M.D., dean of the Boonshoft School of Medicine. “We know that by creating a workforce that reflects society, we will improve health care quality for Ohio and beyond, and therefore we are committed to admitting medical students reflecting the many dimensions of diversity. Our students, who predominantly come from Ohio, are stellar young people who, in high numbers, remain in Ohio and choose primary care and other much-needed specialties.”

Lakia Young, director of admissions at the Boonshoft School of Medicine, said that the school has had a “longstanding interest in educating a culturally diverse student population. The recognition by U.S News and World Report shines a light on the work that we have been doing for over 40 years.”

“Not only should medical student and physician demographics reflect the national population, but studies show that racial and ethnic minority physicians are more likely to practice primary care and serve underserved communities,” Young said. “We look forward to continuing to matriculate a culturally diverse student body and educating future physicians who will provide patient-focused care and improve the health of their communities.”

In addressing the diversity issue, the Association of American Medical Colleges said, “Medical school leaders have embraced diversity and inclusion as key components of achieving their institutions’ missions, visions and goals. … A shared desire for change, aided by a growing number of resources, will enable medical schools and academic health centers to assess their institutional culture and climate and improve their capacity for diversity and inclusion.”

In the case of the Boonshoft School of Medicine, it’s already addressing the need for diversity.

Jan 12, 2022

The Wright State University Raj Soin College of Business is one of the nation’s most outstanding business schools, offering a top on-campus MBA program, according to The Princeton Review.

The education services company chose the Raj Soin College of Business for its Best Business Schools for 2022, an evaluation of on-campus MBA programs at a select 241 business schools out of the 521 schools accredited by the Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business and less than 25% of all business degree-offering schools.

“This honor is a true testament to our faculty, staff, as well as our intelligent and industrious students and alumni,” said Thomas Traynor, Ph.D., dean of the Raj Soin College of Business. “We have been the only business school in the greater Dayton region to be honored with Princeton Review’s Best Business Schools designation for several years and are proud that Princeton Review’s thorough review process continues to recognize our excellence.”

The list, which was released Dec. 14, was based on a combination of institutional and student survey data, including career outcomes, admissions selectivity and academic rigor.

The MBA program at Wright State provides an in-depth, multidisciplinary understanding of business while emphasizing ethics and sustainability and a global perspective.

“We recommend Wright State as an excellent choice for an aspiring MBA,” said Rob Franek, editor-in-chief of The Princeton Review.

The company chose the schools for its 2022 list based on data from the company’s surveys of administrators at business schools during the 2020-21 academic year. The administrator survey, which numbered more than 300 questions, covered topics from academic offerings and admission requirements to data about current students as well as graduates’ employment.

“What makes our Best Business Schools list unique is that we factor in data from our surveys of students attending the schools about their campus and classroom experiences,” said Franek. “For our 2022 list we tallied surveys of more than 18,900 students at 241 business schools.”

The Princeton Review’s 80-question student survey asked students about their school’s academics, student body and campus life as well as about themselves and their career plans. The student surveys were conducted during the 2020-21, 2019-20 and 2018–19 academic years.

Wright State students said the Raj Soin College of Business offers a great education for an affordable price. In addition to a traditional full-time MBA, the Raj Soin College of Business offers cohort MBA programs that meet in the evenings or on the weekends to accommodate the needs of working students.

Students said they appreciate they can get a great education without sacrificing too much of their work life, that Wright State is very commuter-friendly and that selecting classes online is easy and convenient.

Students said classes foster innovation and creativity and that lectures and discussions revolve around real-world experiences. They said the workload is challenging but manageable and that most professors are top-notch and help students become well-rounded business professionals.

The Princeton Review did not rank the on-campus MBA programs overall, from 1 to 241, or name one business school best overall. All schools that participated in The Princeton Review Best Business Schools for 2022 survey project were considered for the lists. Schools that did not participate were not considered.

In November, The Princeton Review named the Raj Soin College of Business as one of the nation’s top colleges for aspiring entrepreneurs. The college was ranked No. 46 among schools for graduate entrepreneurship studies in 2021. Wright State’s ranking was based on its New Venture Creation concentration in the Master of Business Administration Program.

The Raj Soin College of Business is one of the select business schools to simultaneously hold the designations of AACSB accredited, Princeton Review Best Business School and be ranked by U.S. News and World Report as having an online MBA and specialized online master’s in business programs that are also among the nation’s best.

College of Nursing and Health ranked No. 3 in Ohio among accredited nursing schools

Dec 16, 2020

Wright State University’s College of Nursing and Health is ranked No. 3 among NursingProcess.org’s 10 Best Accredited Nursing Schools in Ohio for 2020, putting it ahead of schools such as Kent State University, Ohio University and Case Western Reserve University.

NursingProcess.org said Wright State’s nursing program delivers a well-rounded nursing education where what students are taught in classroom lectures is reinforced by labs and other experiential learning opportunities.

It says a rapidly aging population in Ohio means that the number of jobs available to graduates of accredited nursing schools is growing much faster than the average for all other types of jobs. It says Ohio has an estimated nursing shortage of 32,000.

The group evaluated all nursing schools approved by their state board of nursing and then ranked the schools based on indicators considered important in defining a nursing student’s preparedness for success in personal and professional life. The group measured academic quality, including the acceptance, graduation and retention rates as well as student-to-faculty ratio.

Wright State’s tunnel system garners the world’s top ranking from a London-based group
Dec 11, 2020

Wright State University is ranked No. 1 in the world among universities when it comes to tunnel systems. That’s according to a report on a London-based media platform that focuses on higher education policy.

The Top 10 rankings by Wonkhe were compiled by Paul Greatrix, contributing editor of the website and registrar at The University of Nottingham.

Wright State tops universities with tunnel systems, ahead of No. 2 University of Sydney, whose tunnel is festooned with graffiti; No. 3 Brown University, one of whose tunnel entrances is said to be the inspiration for the Bat Cave in the 1960’s “Batman” television series; and No. 7 Yale University, whose tunnels served as a fallout shelter during the Cold War era.

Each tunnel system was based on scale, coolness, utility and associated myths and legends.

“Top of the heap is Wright State University, which seems to have the biggest and best tunnel system of them all and where tunnels are a fundamental part of campus life,” Greatrix wrote.

With two miles of tunnels linking 20 of 23 buildings in the academic section of the Dayton Campus, the tunnel system has made Wright State one of the most accessible colleges in the country.

Greatrix noted that the tunnels provide a convenience in bad weather and make the campus more accessible to persons with disabilities. He also noted that the tunnels may be entered by stairwells and elevators, are facilitated by signs and maps at intersections, and feature vending machines in various areas.

“Well done Wright State,” Greatrix wrote.

Magazine ranks Wright State No. 3 in the nation for its wheelchair-friendly features

Dec 01, 2020

Wright State University is ranked No. 3 in the nation for its wheelchair-friendly features and accessibility, according to New Mobility magazine and the United Spinal Association.

The magazine’s Wheels on Campus guide to wheelchair-friendly higher education ranked the country’s Top 20 institutions.

“I was pretty ecstatic in learning that we were in the top three,” said Thomas Webb, director of disability services and Wright State’s coordinator of the Americans with Disabilities Act. “We’re in really good company when we look at the other universities that are listed there.”

New Mobility magazine, which informs wheelchair users about lifestyle issues, is the membership publication of the United Spinal Association, a nonprofit disability rights and veterans service organization.

The magazine’s Wheels on Campus guide helps students who use wheelchairs make informed decisions on choosing a college or university. The magazine said physical access is critical to the full range of college experience, even in the age of remote learning, and that finding a campus that is 100% accessible is a rarity.

“Here are the pioneers and leaders that consistently offer a wide range of inclusive opportunities in a truly accessible setting,” the magazine wrote of the Top 10 schools.

The magazine sent survey emails to 400 colleges and universities and did in-person reporting at selected campuses, including Wright State.

“In terms of wheelchair accessibility, the campus is one of the best in the nation,” the magazine wrote of Wright State. “Universal design principles are present in the centralized main campus of 20 buildings, which are offset around a court of accessible walkways.”

Webb said the magazine did a significant amount of research and legwork to produce the rankings. He said a representative from the magazine came to Wright State to meet with faculty, staff and students and tour the campus.

Wright State goes “beyond the legal minimum of accessibility by providing access underground,” the magazine wrote. “The tunnels, legendary among the Ohio disability community, are especially important to wheelchair users who need to get to classes and activities during occasional snowstorms.”

Webb said the ranking gives Wright State the opportunity to be recognized and celebrated for something it takes a lot of pride in but is also humble about.

“When it comes to students with disabilities, it’s something we’ve excelled at since the 1970s,” he said. “What’s reflected in this ranking is that we have often gone above and beyond in what we provide our students with disabilities.”

Webb said that includes a personal attendant station that offers assistance and support to students with disabilities.

Webb said Wright State is looking to grow its adaptive recreation program and applied for a grant that would enable the purchase of four-wheel quadcycles that would give students with disabilities access to the wooded trails on campus.

Webb said New Mobility magazine has a broad reach and he believes the ranking will have more potential students, especially those outside of the region, taking a look at Wright State as a possible school to attend. He said it may also prompt other universities to seek out Wright State out as an expert in disability services.

Many of the other colleges ranked by the magazine are much larger than Wright State and have more resources.

“A lot of time it boils down to the people who are doing the work day to day and supporting the students,” said Webb. “It’s a good reflection on what they’ve been working on the past 15 to 20 years just to improve the services we have for students with disabilities.”

Wright State’s undergraduate computer science program ranked by U.S. News

Sep 14, 2020

U.S. News & World Report has named Wright State University’s bachelor of science in computer science (BSCS) among the best in the nation. The program, offered by the Department of Computer Science and Engineering in the College of Engineering and Computer Science, was included in the magazine’s rankings for 2021.

Wright State BSCS graduates are proficient in software and software systems across multiple application areas including machine learning, artificial intelligence, cyber security, mobile applications, web development and databases.

The Department of Computer Science and Engineering offers well-equipped educational laboratories, excellent faculty, small class sizes, opportunities for undergraduate participation in funded research projects and a flexible program for working professionals.

The program also offers unique opportunities for collaborative research with Wright-Patterson Air Force Base and its research facilities; Reynolds and Reynolds; Leidos; Ball Aerospace; the Department of Health and Human Services; the National Science Foundation; and other institutions.

Graduates of the program are in exceedingly high demand and command some of the highest salaries among all undergraduate majors in the Dayton region and nationally.

Wright State designated as a National Center of Academic Excellence in Cyber Defense Education

Jul 02, 2020

The National Security Agency and Department of Homeland Security have designated Wright State University as a National Center of Academic Excellence in Cyber Defense Education.

The master’s degree cyber program that received the designation is part of the Department of Computer Science and Engineering in the College of Engineering and Computer Science.

“Your ability to meet the increasing demands of the program criteria will serve the nation well in contributing to the protection of the national information infrastructure,” Karen Leuschner, director of the National Centers of Academic Excellence, said in a June 15 letter to Wright State.

Official letters of notification were also sent to Ohio Gov. Mike DeWine, Ohio members of Congress and several congressional committees.

“It’s a big deal,” said Vance Saunders, director of Wright State’s cybersecurity program. “It’s a good thing to have. It’s great recognition and a good indicator of a strong cyber program.”

DHS and NSA jointly created the National Centers of Academic Excellence (CAE) in cyber defense and cyber operations in 1999. The goal of the program is to reduce the vulnerability of the national information infrastructure by promoting higher education and research in cyber defense and producing professionals with cyber defense expertise.

Saunders said the designation, which is good through the 2025 academic year, is very much like receiving an accreditation.

“There are certain knowledge units you have to provide,” he said. “There are certain capabilities your faculty has to have.”

Currently, nine schools in Ohio have the designation. Five of them are in southwest Ohio in what is known as the “CinDay Cyber Corridor.”

“That’s pretty amazing,” said Saunders. “This designation continues to reinforce the amazing strength of CAE-designated institutions here in the Miami Valley.”

Saunders said the designation also opens up some opportunities, including new scholarships that become available.

To achieve the CAE designation in Wright State’s master’s degree in cybersecurity with cyberdefense concentration, a student must take six required courses, one elective and complete a thesis. Saunders said having a CAE-CD certified designation on their transcripts will enhance students’ prospects of landing important Defense Department and other government jobs.

“That would put you ahead of someone who didn’t have the designation,” he said.

Wright State offers a bachelor’s degree and certificate in cybersecurity as well as a master’s degree and certificate.

“We have one of the most robust, comprehensive cyber programs across the board,” said Saunders.

In 1982, Saunders enrolled at Wright State on an Air Force scholarship and earned his bachelor’s degree in computer science. Four years later he returned to Wright State, again on an Air Force scholarship, and received his master’s in computer science.

He worked at the Air Force Research Laboratory at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base and in 1993 was hired by Ball Aerospace and Technology Corp. in Dayton, where he became the chief technology officer for one of the company’s four business areas.

In 2014, he was named director of the cybersecurity program in the Wright State College of Engineering and Computer Science.

One reason to go into cybersecurity is the high demand and relatively high salaries. And its ability to make a difference in the world appeals to Generation Z, those born from 1995 to 2010 and who constitute a large segment of U.S. college students.

Leuschner said the National Cyber Strategy addresses the critical shortage of professionals with cybersecurity skills and highlights the importance of higher education as a solution to defending America’s cyberspace.

“A highly skilled cybersecurity workforce is a strategic national security advantage,” said Leuschner. “The United States government will continue to invest in and enhance programs that build the domestic talent pipeline, from primary through postsecondary education. Education is the key to promoting these ideals.”
