Title: Non-barred Ringed Galaxies: The Curious Case of LEDA 1000714
Abstract: In this talk, I will introduce the concept of non-barred ringed galaxies in the context of galaxy morphology and structure. Cosmological simulations of structure formation cannot currently produce non-barred ringed galaxies and the prevailing theory is that rings form due to the presence of a non-axisymmetric perturbation, typically a bar. To find non-barred ringed galaxies, therefore raises some questions about our ideas of how galaxies form, especially in these rare cases. I will introduce three types of non-barred ringed galaxies, polar-ring galaxies, collisional-ring galaxies, and Hoag-type galaxies. I will give an overview of Hoag’s object, the archetypical non-barred ringed galaxies. The talk will be mainly focused on the Hoag-type galaxy, LEDA 1000714, and how we uncovered the existence of a diffuse red ring in this object.
