October 7, 2021 - [OFFICIAL-L] Raiders and Lakers Don’t Haze

turning point sculpture on campus

Dear Wright State Community,

At Wright State University, we are committed to a culture that fosters dignity and respect for the rights of all members of our university community. Students who are involved in student organizations have been shown to have higher rates of persistence and completion and describe a keen sense of belonging on campus. We want to continue to foster a safe environment where students can participate in student organizations, without fear for their well-being.

Therefore, I am proud to have joined other university presidents from across Ohio in support of the newly signed Ohio Anti-Hazing Act, also known as Collin’s Law. Read the new Ohio Anti-Hazing Act.

Wright State University is taking this opportunity to inform our campus communities of policies and procedures to report suspected hazing.

Hazing is any activity expected of someone joining or participating in a group (club, organization, or team) that humiliates, degrades, abuses, or endangers them, causing or creating a substantial risk of mental or physical harm, including coercing another to consume alcohol or drugs, as defined in section 3719.011 of the Ohio Revised Code, regardless of the person’s willingness to participate or whether the act occurs on or off campus.

Please note that failure by students or employees to intervene, prevent, or report any act of hazing may also constitute a violation. Together as Raiders and Lakers we will not tolerate hazing and will support victims. The new Ohio Anti-Hazing Law requires that if you know hazing is occurring you must report, and failure to report could result in a first-degree misdemeanor charge.

You can report hazing in these ways:

  • Contact University Police at 937-775-2111 or 911 if you feel there is an immediate concern for the safety and well-being of a member of our community, or file a report via wright.edu/police/silent-witness
  • Make an anonymous report using EthicsPoint
  • Contact Community Standards and Student Conduct at 937-775-4240 or visit the staff in 206 Student Union to file a report

Read the university's policy on hazing and other resources to prevent hazing at wright.edu/hazing.

Thank you for doing your part to keep our campus safe!

Best wishes,

Sue
