Dear Wright State Community,
Many of you are aware that Senate Bill 83 was recently introduced in the Ohio Senate. This proposed legislation is extensive and, as it is currently written, will impact several areas of Wright State University operations, including university mission statements; diversity, equity, and inclusion policies and practices; policies related to intellectual diversity and divisive concepts; syllabus requirements; faculty workload, evaluation, and post-tenure review processes; partnerships with the People’s Republic of China; Board of Trustees training; campus speakers; a requirement of an American history/government course for all undergraduate students; financial reporting; and a prohibition on employees of any state institution of higher education to strike.
Wright State University is working with other public universities in the state through the Inter-University Council (IUC) of Ohio to address concerns with the sponsor as the proposed legislation proceeds through the legislative process.
The IUC has asked member institutions to provide feedback, and we invite the campus community to assist in these efforts. If you wish to provide feedback, please email your comments to SB83comments@wright.edu.
This feedback will be compiled and shared. In addition, we are completing a fiscal analysis of the proposed bill that will be sent to the Ohio Legislative Service Commission.
This legislative process is in its early stages, and we appreciate your involvement.
Best wishes,
Sue Edwards, Ph.D.
President
