Overview
Editing an existing page is the most common task for web editors. This process allows you to update content while maintaining structure, accessibility, and consistency.
Step-by-Step Instructions
- Log in to your assigned site. See the Logging in and Out page for further instruction.
- Navigate to the live page you want to edit.
- Click the Edit tab at the top.
- Make your updates in the content editor.
- Enter a brief description in the Revision log message field.
- Select the appropriate moderation state (Needs Work or Needs Review).
- Click Save.
Before You Send for Review
Always review your changes before placing sending to UCM for publishing.
- Confirm headings and spacing look correct.
- Test any links you added or updated.
Important Editing Guidelines
Headings
Headings (H2, H3, etc.) are critical for page structure and accessibility.
- Avoid deleting text directly next to a heading
- Be careful when using backspace near headings
Deleting incorrectly can remove the heading tag and break the page structure.
If something looks off after editing, check the heading formatting or contact the Web Strategy Team.
Embedded Content (Pink "Embed" Areas)
Some pages include embedded content blocks, often shown as a pink area labeled "Embed."
- These sections are controlled by the system
- They are not editable within the content editor
Do not attempt to modify or remove these.
If changes are needed, submit a request using the Web Support form at the bottom of the page.
Source Button
The Source option shows the HTML code behind the page.
- This should not be used by editors
- Changes made in source can break formatting and accessibility
Source editing is reserved for the Web Strategy Team.
Best Practices
Follow these best practices when editing a site.
- Keep edits focused and intentional
- Avoid making multiple unrelated changes at once
- Use the revision log to clearly describe what changed
- Follow university formatting guidelines and standards
- Save multiple times if editing large amounts of content
When to Ask for Help

- Unsure about formatting or structure
