Midwest Paint Group with Gabriel Laderman: Realism and Its Discontents
March 27–May 6, 2012
From March 27 – May 6, 2012 the Robert and Elaine Stein Galleries will present work by the Midwest Paint Group with Gabriel Laderman. The exhibition will explore the group’s focus and commitment to Post Abstract Figuration; a movement that explores the ideas and modes of realism in painting. Glen Cebulash, Chair of Art and Art History at Wright State University will curate the exhibition.
The Midwest Paint Group, according to participating artist Timothy King, is not interested in conforming to any preconceived notion of what art is or should be. Instead, says King, “They [the group] have begun all over again.” Artists such as Chaim Soutine, Edward Hopper, Wilber Niewald, and Stanley Lewis have inspired the group and their works. The exhibition will include paintings by Bob Brock (MO), Deborah Chlebek (OH), Tina Engels (IL), Philip Hale (OH/ Costa Rica), Timothy King (IL), Lynette Lombard (IL), Jeremy Long (NY), Amy MacLennan (MO), Michael Neary (MO), Ron Weaver (AZ/ME), and Megan Williamson (IL).
Gabriel Laderman (1929–2011) was a key figure in the development of the Post Abstract Figuration movement during its beginnings in the 1960’s and 70’s. He was inspired by multiple sources, such as modernism and the early Renaissance, seventeenth century realism, and Asian art, and often fused them together into new and innovative works.
On Sunday, May 6, 2012 a closing reception will be held in the Robert & Elaine Stein Galleries from 4:00 p.m. until 5:30 p.m. The exhibition is made possible with support by the Ohio Arts Council, the Friends and Members of the Galleries, and the Wright State University College of Liberal Arts.
