About International Laptop Travel Kits

CaTS now offers an International Laptop Travel Kit that faculty and staff members can check out when working or conducting research out of the country. The travel kit consists of a laptop, domestic and international charger, and cell phone for connecting to Wright State’s virtual desktop server.

Getting Started

For more information, or to request a laptop travel kit, contact the CaTS Help Desk at 937-775-4827. You will be asked to sign an International Laptop Travel Kit Checkout Agreement (PDF) acknowledging your responsibilities and provide an FOP for any accrued charges or damages to the equipment. Requests to check out a kit should be made as far in advance as possible. CaTS will need at least fourteen business days to prepare the equipment for travel. Limited quantities are available.

You are responsible for knowing the restrictions and following the laws of the country you are traveling to in regards to encryption technologies and internet use. More information about foreign travel can be found on the Travel.State.Gov website.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • How do I reserve an International Laptop Travel Kit?

    International Laptop Travel Kits can be reserved by contacting the CaTS Help Desk at (937) 775-4827, or emailing helpdesk@wright.edu. Due to limited supply, reservations should be made as far in advance as possible. A minimum of fourteen days is needed to prepare the equipment for checkout, including training for use of the equipment.

  • In what countries can this kit be used?

    All equipment contained in this kit can be used in any country. It is the user's responsibility for knowing the restrictions and following the laws of the country to which you are traveling. 

  • Do I have to check out a cell phone with this kit?

    The laptop is available for separate checkout. The cell phone is not available for separate checkout and should be used for authentication and emergency purposes. Minimal personal use is acceptable. 

  • Is there a charge associated with this service?

    A base fee of $35/month will be charged for use of the cell phone. This fee could change because of, but not limited to, app downloads, fluctuating international data rates, or exceeding the cell phone talk and data plan. If you are only checking oiut the laptop there is no fee.

  • Can I use the cell phone to make voice calls?

    The cell phone is intended for authentication to the Wright State network. In the event of an emergency, the cell phone can be used to make voice calls. Minimal personal use is acceptable.

  • Can I install additional software or apps on the laptop and cell phone?

    Software and apps can be installed at the user's discretion. Any fees associated with additional installations will be charged to the FOP provided at checkout. If you want CaTS to install software in advance, a minimum of fourteen days is required to prepare the equipment.

  • What kind of laptop does the kit contain?

    There are three laptops available for checkout. Depending on availability, users have the choice of a Microsoft Surface, HP laptop, or MacBook Air.

  • What kind of cell phone does the kit contain?

    All International Laptop Travel Kits contain an iPhone 5s.

  • What is DUO and how do I use it to authenticate to Wright State's network?

    DUO Mobile is an application used for two-factor authentication into the Wright State network. This allows you to connect to a virtual desktop and access your files stored on your Wright State workstation.

    To connect to VDI, follow these steps:

    1. Open the 'VMWare Horizon Client' on the provided laptop
    2. Double click on the VDI Server
    3. Enter your campus username (w###abc) and password in the sign-in block
    4. Next, you will receive a push notification through the DUO app on your smartphone
    5. Select 'Accept' on your smartphone
    6. Double click on 'WSU-VDI' on the laptop
    7. Your Windows environment will open and your VDI is ready for use

    Note: Once connected to VDI, you will have access to normal services (H:// drive, K:// drive, etc), the same way you do when working on campus. 

  • How long can I check out a kit for?

    Kits are available for checkout based on availability and at the discretion of the CaTS department. Once a request to checkout a kit has been made, CaTS will contact you to discuss the details of your travel.

  • What if I damage the laptop or cell phone during my travels?

    The user is responsible for the equipment during their travels. Fees due to  damage beyone normal wear and tear or loss will be charged to the FOP provided upon checkout. Charges will not exceed the full, current retail price of the damaged or unreturned equipment. The user will be notified prior to any charges assessed to the FOP.

  • What if the laptop or cell phone is lost or stolen during my travels?

    The full, current retail price of any damaged or unreturned equipment will be charged to the FOP provided upon checkout. The user will be notified prior to any charges assessed to the FOP.

  • How will I know when I've reached the data limit on the cell phone?

    When you are close to reaching your data limit, you will receive a text message on the cell phone. If you exceed the limit, data will not be discontinued, however a charge will be assessed to the FOP provided upon checkout.
