WSURaiders.com: Women’s basketball dominates UIC Sunday afternoon

After their overtime win against IUPUI on Friday, the Raiders traveled to Chicago to finish off their three game road swing against the UIC Flames. The Raiders moved to 2-0 in conference play and 10-4 on the season with their 79-46 win over the Flames. Michal Miller led the offense for the Raiders with a 14 points performance. Two other Raiders scored in double-digits with Anisja Harris scoring 12 and Angel Baker adding another 10.

1st Quarter

The Raiders started off the afternoon with a bang as Emily Vogelpohl hit the first shot of the game, sinking her shot from three point range. While the Raiders would spread the wealth among scorers, the Flames would rely upon guard Brittany Byrd who would score their first 11 points of the quarter, and 14 of the Flames' 16 during the period. Byrd's electric performance would give the Flames a two-point lead to end the quarter.

2nd Quarter

Wright State would score the first 10 points of the quarter before UIC would find the basket again. Teneshia Dixon started off the quarter with a goal from behind the arc, Tyler Frierson would add five points, and Emily Vogelpohl would contribute another two before Brittany Byrd put some points on the board for the Flames. The Flames would only score six points against a stymying Raider defense, all coming from Byrd. The Raiders would outscored the Flames 20-6 and enter halftime with a 12 point lead.

3rd Quarter

It would be nearly three minutes before the first score but the Flames would be the first to strike in the half with Byrd sinking her layup. After the initial score, Wright State would go on another run putting in the next nine points. Anisja Harris led the quarter with two three-points, her six points would give the Raiders their largest lead of the game, 21. The Flames ended the quarter on a seven point run but still trailed the Raiders by 14 points.

4th Quarter

Michal Miller began the last quarter sinking both of her three throws. Following a Flames layup, Miller then put in a three-pointer from deep. On the ensuing possession, Emily Vogelpohl would steal a pass from the Flames and create a fastbreak on the other end for the Raiders. Vogelpohl would dish the pass outside to Miller who sank her shot from the arc to put in another three-pointer. The Raiders ended on a nine point run and kept the Flames scoreless in the last 4:27 of the game.

By the Numbers

  • After allowing her to score 14 in the first quarter, the Raiders held Brittany Byrd to 6 in the second and nine for the remainder of the game
