Thomas von der Embse

Thomas J. von der Embse, 88, passed away peacefully at Hospice of Dayton on Dec. 17, 2023, surrounded by family.

Tom graduated from Kalida High School and received an undergraduate degree from the University of Dayton. He was able to attend college via the G.I. Bill and spent two years in an artillery unit in Hanau, Germany. After returning to the states, he went on to earn an MBA from Indiana University and Ph.D. from The Ohio State University.

Tom enjoyed a long and distinguished career as a college professor and administrator. He was chairman of the Management Department at Wright State University, worked in the industry at the National Management Association and ultimately retired as dean of the Business College at Indiana University-Kokomo.

He pursued many activities throughout his life and was active in the choir at Holy Trinity Catholic Church, Razor’s Edge Barbershop Chorus, New Horizons Music Program, and Toastmasters.

Tom is survived by his wife Kay; daughter Lisa (Todd); son Eric; grandsons Drew, Carter, and Ben; stepchildren Jeff (Teresa) and Doug (Denise) Greenup; step-grandchildren Garrett, Nicholas, and Stacey Greenup; and his beloved niece and nephews. He was preceded in death by parents Sylvester and Adelia von der Embse, brothers Norman and Urban, and sister Cecilia.

A memorial mass was held on Dec. 28, 2023, at Holy Trinity Catholic Church in Middletown, Ohio. Memorial Donations in Tom's name may be made to: Ohio’s Hospice of Dayton or New Horizons Music Program "University of Dayton."
