Donna Schlagheck (Professor Emerita at Wright State University) will speak on national security issues across the Middle East.

This region faces numerous challenges, changes and threats, all involving American interests:

  • the Israeli-Palestinian conflict;
  • the Turkish-Kurdish conflict now rising out of the Syrian civil war;
  • the Iranian-Saudi axis of the Sunni-Shiite divide (including Yemen, Lebanon and Qatar);
  • the re-emerging Russian hand;
  • and the unfinished/thwarted Arab Spring of 2011.

This complex array of issues lacks active American leadership and interest, despite long-term concern for Israel's security, a stable oil supply, and a broad array of human rights issues (self determination, gender rights, and the environment).  A conversation across this range of countries and issues is expected.  Please bring your questions and ideas.
