The Eastern Shawnee In Ohio

Talon Silverhorn, a direct descendent of Shawnee Chief Blue Jacket, will deliver a lecture on “The Eastern Shawnee in Ohio” (including a discussion of the sources of people’s images of North American Indians).

Where: Wright State University-Lake Campus, Dicke Hall

When: Thursday, November 3, 2022 at 3:30pm

Silverhorn is the Cultural Programs Manager for the Ohio Department of Natural Resources (ODNR).  He is overseeing the development of the Great Council State Park, just north of Xenia, which will be a connection to Ohio’s Native American and pioneer past. The area was once home to Oldtown, one of the largest-known Shawnee settlements in Ohio. More than 1,000 people called Oldtown home from approximately 1777 to 1780. Their stories directly intersect with that of historic settlers like Daniel Boone, who was held captive in Oldtown for a period of time.

The Great Council State Park, Ohio’s 76th state park, will feature a 12,000-square-foot interpretive center with an architectural design based on a council house historically used by the Shawnee tribes. It will be on the site of the birthplace of the Shawnee Chief Tecumseh.  Inside, visitors will find three floors of exhibits, a theater area, a living stream, and a gallery. Thedisplays will honor the Shawnee tribes of the past and allow present-day members of the Shawnee nation to share their stories. The expected opening is 2023.
