October 10, 2023 - Forward Momentum

photo of provost amy thompsonDear Colleagues,

This week’s newsletter is one day early as I hope you are able to participate in today’s World Mental Health Day activities. After participating in a variety of activities last week, I am so pleased that we had a chance to come together as a supportive community to foster understanding, resilience, and a positive approach to mental wellness. While we were able to focus on mental health the past two weeks, our work will not end here. The wonderful work the Mental Health Task Force has done and continues to do highlights this imperative aspect of health on campus in many different ways. I look forward to continuing this conversation and highlighting upcoming initiatives.

Student Recognition in Best Integrated Writing Journal Reopens

While working to recognize exemplary work by our faculty and staff, our students also inspire us every day. Wright State’s Best Integrated Writing journal will resume showcasing student excellence next spring. Please consider submitting the work of students whom you believe deserve recognition and publication. These written works can come from spring, summer, and fall 2023 IW courses.

The deadline for the spring 2024 edition of Best Integrated Writing is January 15, 2024. To submit, email the editors at kristie.mckiernan@wright.edu or tracy.smith@wright.edu.

Only faculty may submit nominations. Nominations (whether they are collaborative or individual) may include essays, posters, multimedia projects, or any other work that features superior writing.

A few policies, preferences, and guidelines for the submission process exist. Nominations do not guarantee acceptance of a student’s work. The editors are responsible for the selection process. Please provide brief comments with the student’s piece. Student permission and knowledge is required for a nomination and before a work is published. We ask that each faculty member send no more than three nominations unless there have been previous arrangements. Finally, please submit these nominations in a Word or PDF document.

Healthy Minds Survey

Remember to complete the Healthy Minds Study. It is important as we want to better understand faculty and staff mental health, well-being, sources of support, and other mental and emotional health topics.

The online, anonymous survey takes about 15 minutes to complete and is your chance to reflect on important topics in your life and our campus community.

To participate, look for the personalized link in the email you received on October 2 with the subject line “Announcing the Healthy Minds Study for Faculty and Staff at Wright State University.”

Participating in this survey will automatically enter you into a sweepstakes for one of two $500 prizes or one of ten $100 prizes. The drawing will be conducted by researchers at the University of Michigan School of Public Health in the summer of 2024. Winners will be notified by email and provided with information about how to collect the prize.

Midterm Grading Now Open

Midterm grade reporting is now open for all full-semester fall classes. A, B, and X term classes are not included in midterm grade reporting. Midterm grade reporting is required by all undergraduate-level classes, with some exceptions.

Midterm grades are due by noon on Wednesday, October 18. Detailed instructions for posting grades can be found on the Registrar’s webpage.

Faculty reporting grades in WINGS Express (and not via Pilot) only need to enter the midterm grade and can ignore the “Last Attend Date” and “Attend Hours” fields.

Grades of Incomplete (I) should only be issued at the end of a term if requested by a student for documented extenuating circumstances that prevented completion of the final part of the course.

Faculty teaching graduate courses are encouraged to submit midterm grades but are not required to do so.

For technical questions regarding reporting grades (such as reporting from Pilot), contact the CaTS Help Desk at 937-775-4827 or helpdesk@wright.edu.

For additional grading questions, please contact the Office of the Registrar at 937-775-5200 or wsu-registrar@wright.edu.

When a Student Needs Support

Wright.edu/help is a great resource for helping students or making referrals. This site contains contact information for emergency or essential departments that can assist your students all in one location.

I hope you all have a wonderful week! You are appreciated!
