Asma Barlas, is currently a professor of Politics as well as the director of the Center for the Study of Culture, Race, and Ethnicity in Ithaca College, New York. Her research interests include Qur'anic hermeneutics, Muslim sexual politics and the relationship between "Islam and the West." Her work on the Qur'an has been translated into many languages including Bengali, Indonesian, Spanish, Portuguese, French, and Urdu.

Dr. Barlas will also be presenting a formal lecture on Tuesday March 12, 6:00 PM in the Rathskellar Lounge, Student Union titled: "The Qur'an, the Shari`ah and Women's Rights" Piediscalzi Lecture Series, which is sponsored by the Department of Religion.
