Kylene (Griffith) Terhune ’13, Music Performance (Vocal)

“There have been many times in my life where I didn’t know what I could achieve until someone else pushed me because of their confidence in my abilities.”

Tell us more about you and your life, your profession, and your successes.

While I chose to completely change the course of my career, much of the training I received in my vocal performance degree has helped me in my current field. I realized the experiences help me relate to people, speak and communicate clearly and effectively and move forward in my current work as a Functional Diagnostic Nutrition Practitioner. I work with clients around the country to help them overcome chronic disease, digestive issues, and autoimmune symptoms.

Whether I work with clients one-on-one, through functional lab testing, or guide them through my online nutrition and lifestyle program “Stop Dieting and Live Your Life - Discover Your #YOUtrition,” I am constantly in front of people, working with them and acting as a coach and leader.

The opportunities I received at Wright State to perform on stage in operas, sing with an orchestra for ARTSGALA, and even something as small as taking a speech class, all helped me become more successful in my profession today.

What is your favorite Wright State memory?

I have so many amazing memories from Wright State! I will never forget performing in Schuster Hall with Dr. Leung and the Wright State chamber orchestra, or sparkling in a red 1920’s flapper dress while performing as Ms. Titmouse in Too Many Sopranos (I mean, I basically got to play myself!). But I think one of my favorite memories was having the opportunity to perform my dream role of The Queen of the Night in the 2014 performance of The Magic Flute. There have been many times in my life where I didn’t know what I could achieve until someone else pushed me because of their confidence in my abilities. Singing that role in front of an audience several nights in a row (thanks to the confidence the teachers had) in me was such an exhilarating experience.

What did receiving the ARTSGALA Scholarship mean to you?

I took several years off from school before coming to Wright State to finish my degree. When I did, I was focused, determined to learn and do my best, and take advantage of this second chance. Receiving the scholarship was affirmation and encouragement that I was in the right place, and doing what I was meant to do at that time in my life! I was, and am, very grateful.
