This 2019-2020 Student Handbook has been prepared by the Division of Student Affairs. The University reserves the right to update, revise, and promulgate these and other policies at any time. The final interpretation of these policies remains with the University. Every effort is made to keep this website updated.

Residence Life and Housing

Wright State University and Residence Life and Housing have instituted a Code of Student Conduct and Campus Housing Policies in order to promote a safe community conducive to academic success.

There are policies in the Code of Student Conduct that are specific to University Housing. The Residence Life and Housing Campus Housing Policies are specific only to residential students.

Please take the time to review these policies so that you will know the behavior that is expected from students living in campus housing at Wright State University.

Hazing Policy

Wright State University recognizes that membership in organizations can significantly enhance the learning and experiences of university students. In addition, the University is committed to cultivating a community that fosters respect for the dignity and rights of all its members. In our community there is no place for hazing which includes abusive behavior, harassment, or assault. Group loyalty and unity is built on trust and mutual respect. Hazing is an abuse of power and relationships, and puts individuals at risk; therefore, Wright State University will not tolerate hazing in any form by any members of the University community. This policy applies to all student organizations including but not limited to fraternities, sororities, military organizations, etc.

Hazing in any form is prohibited. Hazing is any action taken or any situation created intentionally that causes embarrassment, harassment or ridicule and risks emotional and/or physical harm to members of a group or team, whether new or not, regardless of the person's willingness to participate. This policy applies to all members of the University community, and applies to behavior that occurs on or off University property, regardless of a person's willingness to participate.

  • Any member of the University community (individual or group) with knowledge or suspicion of hazing is expected to report the activity to the appropriate University officials or the University Police. 
  • Retaliating in any manner against an individual who reports hazing or who participates in an investigation of a hazing report is strictly prohibited and will be investigated by the Office of Community Standards and Student Conduct. 
  • Making an intentionally false accusation of hazing is strictly prohibited.
  • All members of the University community shall cooperate in an investigation of hazing.
  • Any organization or individual may be found responsible for any violations of this policy if it is shown that the organization or individual did not discourage or did not take reasonable steps to prevent hazing. 

Rights of Those Who Report

The Office of Community Standards and Student Conduct will not pursue disciplinary violations against students or organizations under the following circumstances: 

  • Individuals who are victims of hazing and truthfully report the activities to the University Police Department and/or an appropriate University official. 
  • Individuals who have knowledge of a hazing incident, but did not participate, and truthfully report the activities that occurred. 
  • An organization that seeks assistance in preventing hazing from occurring, even if past behaviors have included hazing. 
  • Any organization that self-reports a hazing incident to the appropriate University officials prior to the incident being reported by another source will be given the opportunity to present to Community Standards and Student Conduct their plans to self-govern and address the conduct violation and change the behavior. At the discretion of Community Standards and Student Conduct, the organization's sanctions could be accepted without any further disciplinary sanctions.
  • Any organization that self-reports must identify those individuals responsible for the hazing behaviors to be held individually responsible through the appropriate conduct process. 

If evidence is presented in subsequent semesters that hazing behaviors have continued within the organization, that organization or individuals may be held responsible for current and past behaviors. 


Demonstrations and Marches Policy

Wright State University recognizes the exercise of the rights of expression, affiliation, and peaceful assemblage. Wright State University students and personnel may express their views by demonstrating peacefully for concepts they wish to make known, and the university will make every reasonable effort to protect those rights. The university also has an equal and simultaneous obligation to protect the rights and freedoms of those who do not choose to participate in a demonstration. Additionally, the university has an obligation to protect its property and to assure continuation of the activities of students, university faculty and staff, and guests on campus.

This policy is not applicable to situations arising within the context of normal classroom instruction and discussion.

In accordance with University Policy 1260.04 Operational Procedures for Demonstrations and Marches, a registration form must be submitted and approved not less than twenty-four (24) hours prior to the planned activity.  Please return the registration form to the Office of the Dean of Students, 224 Student Union.
