Writing in the Major
All students must complete the required Integrated Writing (IW) courses in their Major to satisfy graduation requirements.
- Students beginning Fall 2025 or later are required to complete at least one IW course in the Major, as part of the three-course IW requirement across Core and Major.

Integrated Writing Courses in the Major
The Undergraduate Curriculum Committee (UCC) must approve any course requesting the Integrated Writing (IW) designation or modifications to a course that currently holds the IW attribute. All IW courses include assignments designed to improve writing skills, provide opportunities for revision, and are evaluated for content, form, style, and correctness. Responsibility for ensuring these requirements are met by the colleges offering the courses. The University Writing Center provides additional support for students.
For Students Beginning Fall 2025 and Later:
-
Students must complete three IW courses in total, distributed as either:
- Two IW courses in the Core and one IW course in the Major, or
- One IW course in the Core and two IW courses in the Major.
- IW courses in the Core require a minimum of 2,000 words of evaluated writing, while IW courses in the Major require a minimum of 5,000 words.
- Assignments will continue to provide opportunities for revision and include a mix of formal and informal writing, with all writing counting toward students’ performance.

Integrated Writing Portfolio in the Major
Under exceptional circumstances, a paper of at least 2500 words written under the direction of a faculty member in the student's major field will be accepted for integrated writing credit. This option may count as no more than one IW course and must be approved by the chair of the student's major department. Students are expected to fulfill the rest of the minimum requirement by completing one or more regular IW courses.
