August 31, 2022 - Forward Momentum

provost amy thompsonDear Colleagues,

Welcome to Week Two! I hope you are off to a great semester! As you settle in for your classes and get to know your students’ names, I invite you to think about what our students learn even when we are not actively teaching course content, as our teaching tip this week indicates. Below is some information that I hope you will find of interest.

Important Reminders and Information

September 2: Participation rosters are due. It is critical that all faculty who are teaching submit these rosters. Documenting student participation/attendance is required for Title IV compliance. For more information, read Faculty Line #252, August 16, 2022 (PDF). Please note that department chairs and deans will receive reports from courses in which this documentation has not been completed.

Participation Roster Due Dates: Last day to drop/withdraw and receive 100% tuition refund:

Full TermWeeks 1–2: Friday, September 2, by 11:59 p.m.
B TermWeek 8: Friday, October 14, by 11:59 p.m.

The window for reporting opened on the first day of the semester. Faculty can access participation rosters for your courses in WINGS Express under the Faculty Tab.

September 6: Deadline for candidates to submit to their department chair their complete Promotion and Tenure document and all materials described in Terms and Conditions.

Teaching Tip

Did you know that when students believe they can learn, they perform better in their courses? This week’s CFE classroom tip shows how you can begin instilling a growth mindset in students (PDF).

Student Loan Forgiveness Plan

President Biden announced a plan to cancel up to $20,000 in debt for Pell Grant recipients with loans held by the Department of Education and up to $10,000 in debt for non-Pell Grant recipients. Borrowers are eligible if their individual income is less than $125,000 (or $250,000 for households).

To qualify for debt cancellation, borrowers may have to submit an application to verify their income (if their income data is not already on file with the Department of Education). The Education Department will establish that application process before the end of the year.

Borrowers can view their loan balances and check their Pell status by logging into the Federal Student Aid account at studentaid.gov. You can also determine who services your federal student loans by visiting studentaid.gov/manage-loans/repayment/servicers. Please be aware that these websites are receiving a lot of traffic right now and may be slow to respond.

More information on the student debt relief plan will be available in the coming weeks. In the meantime, borrowers can read more at StudentAid.gov/debtrelief and sign up to be notified when the application becomes available. You can watch this video to learn more about the waiver.

Announcements

Dr. Lingwei Chen, assistant professor in the Department of Computer Science and Engineering, and Dr. Nathan Wages, a post-doc working with Dr. Sherif Elbasiouny in the Department of Neuroscience, Cell Biology, and Physiology, have been selected as DARPA-Risers and will attend a special Risers session at the DARPA-Forward conference on October 4–5 at Ohio State University.

This selection recognizes their early-career research contributions, and the event will provide opportunities to connect with DARPA program managers and other collaborators interested in partnering on DARPA-focused research proposals. Event details are at forward.darpa.mil.

Have a great week!
