April 26, 2023 - Forward Momentum

photo of provost amy thompsonDear Colleagues,

While I am just shy of my one-year anniversary here at Wright State University, I feel that this week is a celebration of all of the wonderful work we’ve done together. With your partnership, we were able to implement multi-term registration, create a policy and process to offer microcredentials to our students, establish four Provost Fellow positions, focus on retention through the creation of university and college-specific retention committees, and recognize the work of our colleagues through President Edwards’ Student Success Champion Awards. I am so proud to be here and am so excited to remain laser-focused on our three R’s: Recruitment, Retention, and Relationships.

Related to retention, the Office of Institutional Research and Effectiveness worked tirelessly to build dashboards for faculty so that you can view your own grade distribution rate. This data will be updated 30 days after the completion of each term and include all course grades back to fall 2012. Information about viewing this data will be communicated once available. While faculty will only be able to view their own section data, deans and department chairs will be able to view all rates for their college and departments, respectively. I hope you will review your own course outcomes data each term and take time to consider those data as you prepare for the new academic year.

You may notice that a Provost Contact Form was added to the Office of the Provost website. This form is intended for students who need assistance and can be submitted at any time. It is my hope that we can work together to address student needs and concerns as timely as possible, and this contact form will be another avenue for communication.

During this special and final week of the semester, I am elated to celebrate the culmination of our students’ hard work during four special commencement ceremonies. If you are able to participate, I encourage you to do so—it means so much to our students and their friends and family to see your support.

Lastly, as I know many of you will not be on campus over the summer months, this newsletter will resume in August. I look forward to your return and the start of another wonderful academic year!

HLC Focused Visit

Our HLC Focused Visit has concluded, and I want to express my heartfelt gratitude for all the hard work you have put in and the progress we have made over the last eight months. We anticipate receiving an initial report within 30 days and the final decision regarding our disposition with HLC in July. We will immediately report what we learn as we receive communication from HLC. Again, thank you so much for all your dedication and help!

Research and Sponsored Program Events

  1. Responsible and Ethical Conduct of Research (RECR) Training Dates:

Research and Sponsored Programs will host the final session addressing the core areas of responsible conduct and the future of the Responsible and Ethical Conduct of Research (RECR) program from 9 to 9:50 a.m. on Friday, April 28, in 101 Neuroscience Engineering Collaboration Building. Register for the session.

The topics covered include data management, conflicts of interest, publication practices, collaborative science, mentoring, research misconduct, and research as a member of society. For additional information, contact Neal Sullivan.

Provisions of the sponsored research contracts may require researcher participation in RECR development activities.

Contractual RECR Requirements: Faculty, staff, students, and external collaborators whose research is supported by these agencies are required to periodically participate in responsible conduct of research forums. This includes anyone who can influence the results and validity of your research. Essentially if their behaviors can influence the validity of the funded research, the requirement applies.

This requirement extends to anyone whose research is supported by an NSF or NIH grant, but all are welcome to attend. Since undergraduate students have a limited ability to adversely affect the results of research, at the discretion of their PI, they will be able to meet the obligation by attending a one-session workshop.

When a Student Needs Support

Wright.edu/help is a great resource for helping students or making referrals. This site contains contact information for emergency or essential departments that can assist your students all in one location.

I hope you all have a wonderful week! You are appreciated!
