Staff Extension Procedure

Procedure for granting an extension to a staff member selecting the VRIP

A.      Guiding principle for granting staff extensions:

A staff employee’s retirement date in VRIP may be extended to as late as December 31, 2016 if that staff member’s September 30, 2016 departure would seriously jeopardize the quality of a critical WSU function in a way that cannot be addressed through:

  • reorganization of the unit’s current employees; or
  • support from employee(s) outside the unit; or
  • approval of a temporary hire; or
  • expedited hiring of a replacement[1].

B.      Process for reviewing staff extension requests:

1.      A request for an extension may be made by the retiring staff member or by his/her Vice-President or Dean.

a)      A staff member who intends to retire under VRIP and believes his/her retirement meets the guiding principle set forth above for an extension may submit a request to the Associate Provost for Faculty and Staff Affairs.  The request should include sufficient detail explaining how the guiding principle is met in this case, why this individual’s extended presence is critical, and the specific date for the proposed extension, which may not be later than December 31, 2016.

b)      A Vice-President or Dean may submit a request to the Associate Provost for Faculty and Staff Affairs that the retirement date of a staff member retiring under VRIP be extended past September 30, 2016.  The request should include sufficient detail explaining how the guiding principle is met in this case, why this individual’s extended presence is critical, and the specific date for the proposed extension, which may not be later than December 31, 2016.  It should also include a statement from the employee that he/she will agree to such an extension, if it is approved.

2.      Requests must be submitted no later than August 1, 2016 to Dr. Steven Berberich, Associate Provost for Faculty and Staff Affairs.

3.      The Provost will review all requests and will provide approvals and denials of all requests no later than August 19, 2016.

All Provost decisions are final and cannot be appealed.
