Accessibility Essentials

Every member of the Wright State community shares the responsibility of making all classroom environments, traditional or virtual, accessible and inclusive to students. This task may seem intimidating in its scope, but beginning with mastering and practicing the 8 Essentials in Accessible Course Design will prepare you well for the journey ahead.

8 Essentials in Accessible Course Design

Color Contrast 

Create a strong contrast between the foreground and background of text and use color carefully. 

Video and Audio 

Ensure all video content has timed closed captions, and that all audio-only content has an accompanying transcript.  

Links 

Incorporate meaningful link text that makes sense out of context. 

Content Structure 

Create organized, easy-to-follow content with heading styles and lists. 

Accessibility Checkers 

Leverage software’s existing tools for easy remediation. 

Fonts 

Choose fonts that are as easy to read as they are attractive. 

Alt Text 

Add descriptive and concise alt text to meaningful images, charts, and graphs. 

PDFs 

Ensure your PDFs are formatted for the benefit of your students.
