Get Involved

During fall semester many Learning Community students participate in short group service-learning projects with their classmates. The service projects often relate to WSU’s common text, the Learning Community curriculum, and/or a specific Learning Community theme.

The Common Text for 2015-16 is The Cellist of Sarajevo by Steven Galloway.  A spare and haunting, wise and beautiful novel about war and the endurance of the human spirit and the subtle ways individuals reclaim their humanity.  A novel of great intensity and power, and inspired by a true story, The Cellist of Sarajevo poignantly explores how war can change one’s definition of humanity, the effect of music on our emotional endurance, and how a romance with the rituals of daily life can itself be a form of resistance.

The Common Text for 2014-15 is The Fault in Our Stars by John Green.  Terminal cancer patient falls in love with someone in her cancer support group, despite her best efforts to not form relationships with people who will be devastated by her inevitable death.  WSU students rallied to raise money for cancer patients at Dayton Children's Medical Center in our fall dance marathon, Raiderthon.  In the spring, students participated in Relay for Life, raising money for the American Cancer Society.

The Common Text for 2013-14 is The Other Wes Moore: One Name, Two Fates by Wes Moore.  Two kids with the same name, living in the same city.  One grew up to be a Rhodes Scholar, decorated combat veteran, White House Fellow, and business leader.  The other is serving a life sentence for felony murder.  Here is the story of two boys and the journey of a generation.  Service-learning projects include support to youth at risk, involvement with social justice projects, and promotion of voter registration and voter awareness.  

The Common Text for 2012-13 was Girl in Translation by Jean Kwok, about a young immigrant in America.  This smart girl, who lives a double life between school and sweatshop, realizes that her family's future is in her hands.  Students participated in service-learning projects related to education and support for new immigrants.

The Common Text for 2011-12 was Zeitoun by Dave Eggers.  Service-learning projects were focused on community-building and refugee issues.

UVC 1020

What is UVC 1020: Campus-Community Connections in the First Year?

UVC 1020 is an elective open to any first year student.  Want to make a difference in our community, explore career opportunities through hands-on experience, and get credit for it?  Each section has a specific focus, is 1 credit and is graded P/U.

UVC 1020 students:

  • Address social issues impacting our community
  • Complete 4-5 weeks of service - generally 1 ½ to 2 hours a week
  • Gain a better understanding of agencies providing services in our community
