Placement Tests

At Wright State, all incoming students are required to take placement tests in mathematics and writing. These tests will help your academic advisor determine the best starting point for these and related courses. Pre-registration is required for all on-campus or remote mathematics placement tests. The writing placement test can be completed online from this page. Complete information about both tests and review math questions can be found below. PLEASE READ ALL OF THE INFORMATION BELOW BEFORE COMPLETING THE ODSP OR REGISTERING FOR THE MATH PLACEMENT TEST SINCE YOU WILL BE PRESUMED INFORMED OF THESE POLICIES.

Placement tests must be completed before you attend a SOAR session (or meet with your advisor) and finalize your class schedule. Plan to complete testing at least ten days before your scheduled SOAR session or advisor appointment. You can register for your SOAR session soon; just be sure to complete your testing before you come.

English/Writing (ODSP)

Wright State's On-line Directed Self Placement (ODSP) is an assessment tool used to determine your starting point in a first-year composition course. You can complete the Writing portion of your placement test from any computer that can access the Wright State University Web site.

All students preparing to enroll in a college English composition are required to complete an online writing placement questionnaire. Any student with previous college composition credit with a grade of "C" or higher or posted AP credit or who has accepted an invitation to be in WSU's Honor program, does not have to take this assessment.

To complete this writing assessment, you will need your CAMPUS username (for example, "w100abc") and password to log on to the following web site: https://www.wright.edu/php-bin/odsp/student/login.php

This assessment will take a few minutes to complete. Answer all questions honestly and thoughtfully. If you do not know your campus username and/or password or have trouble logging on, please call the Help Desk at 937-775-4827 (toll-free at 888-775-4827) or visit 025 Library Annex.

Mathematics

The Math Department at Wright State has endorsed the ACT product "eCOMPASS" to identify the appropriate starting level for math courses at WSU. eCOMPASS is a computerized assessment for students needing to take a math course at WSU. Unlike ODSP, which can literally be accessed almost anywhere, the Math test must be taken in a proctored setting. You can register to take the eCOMPASS test at WSU's Dayton campus or at a remote site more conveniently located near your home.

You can choose to take your math test at WSU's Lake campus in Celina, Ohio (call directly 1-800-237-1477 and ask for "a testing appointment").

Any student who has not taken a college level mathematics or statistics course in college is required to take the Math Placement Exam. Scroll down to register.

Suggested Review

All students preparing to enroll for their first mathematics course in college must take a mathematics placement examination. Your course enrollment is based on your score on this test. Please be aware that personal calculators are not allowed for any placement testing - however, the eCompass program does allow the MicroSoft built-in calculator. Transfer students whose previous mathematics/statistics courses are over one (1) year old are required to take the math placement test.

It is to your advantage to review Pre-Algebra and Beginning Algebra before you take the eCompass math assessment. If you are considering a degree that involves levels of higher math, we strongly recommend that you also review Advanced Algebra and Trigonometry.

  • Arrive one half hour prior to your placement test to allow yourself time to park, walk to the testing room, and get checked in.
  • Remember to bring your photo ID and two pencils.

If you would like to be contacted about a possible remote test location other than in Ohio, you will select session "99" on the online registration form. Contact could take more than a day or two.

For remote testing, a University College representative will contact you after we have received your profile and other requested information to see if Wright State can arrange a test for you. Pre-registration is required. If you select a site other than Dayton, OH., you will receive an email from HVServices@act.org once your math test has been set up.

If you have difficulty with online registration, call University College at 877-775-5770. Most off-site locations will require a fee for testing.

Remote Ohio city locations include: Chillicothe, Cincinnati, Cleveland (downtown), Columbus, Highland Hills (Cleveland), Huron, Lima, Mansfield, Marietta, Nelsonville, North Canton, Orrville, Parma (Cleveland), Springfield, Toledo, Westlake, Youngstown and Zanesville.

Proctoring Services

If you need to use test proctoring services because of a physical or learning disability, contact the Office of Disability Services at 937-775-5680. You must complete a pre-service interview to be eligible for any accommodation.

Re-testing Policy

We recommend you review before testing because Wright State has restrictions on the circumstances under which students can retest in math within a calendar year. The retest policy as currently listed states: A student can only retest if they have not enrolled and completed a math course with in the past calendar year from their last math test. If the student has been enrolled in a math course past the "Drop Date" and received a grade of A, B, C, D, F, I, M, P, U, or X, the individual would need to wait a calendar year from the time of taking that course to retest. The math retest is not designed to allow a student to move up or skip a math class sequence. A student can test once a term for maximum of four times in a calendar year. A student must wait a minimum of one week between testing sessions before they could retest. Students must have the recommendation of their Academic Advisor to retest. A first retest will be free.  Subsequential retests will require the student to pay a $20.00 fee.  Payment must be paid for the retest fee in the University College office before the student would be allowed to retest. The student's receipt should be taken to the testing session to verify their registration. Math Placement Scores expire after 1 year. A student is required to retest if he/she has not taken and passed a mathematics/statistics course within one year of taking the placement test.

On-Campus Placement Testing Dates for Spring, Summer, and Fall 2008 Registration
