Student Union & Event Services
and Campus Recreation Achievement Awards
The Student Union
& Event Services and Campus Recreation Achievement Awards
were created in 1992 when Wright State University contracted
its bookstore operations to an outside vendor. After the
transfer of operations, the excess inventory of more than
10,000 books was stored in one of the rooms in the old Physical
Education Building. The University Center inherited the
books when preparing for expansion.
The student employees of the University Center inventoried the books and volunteered their time to conduct the book sale. These students sold books for $1 to $.50 in the Upper Hearth Lounge and raised more than $6,000 for scholarships.
A core group of University Center student employees developed the following award criteria:
- Commitment to their jobs and the Student Union &
Event Services and Campus Recreation offices' mission
- Work above and beyond the call of duty
- Length of employment
- Exceptional leadership or extracurricular involvement that positively enhances
the Student Union & Event Services, Campus Recreation,
Wright State University and/or the community
- Financial need
As the Student
Union has grown and changed, so have the Student Union &
Event Services and Campus Recreation Achievement Awards.
Our group of student employees has grown to nearly 200,
and the Student Union Administrative staff has merged with
both Campus Recreation and Conferences and Events, in order
to more effectively serve students. The Student Union &
Event Services and Campus Recreation Achievement Awards
have experienced similar growth with three of our accounts
reaching endowment status -- one through the generosity
of the Gem Music and Vending Company and the Hayes family,
who endowed the Dorothy Ward Hayes Award, friends and family
of Lorna Dawes endowing the Lorna G. Dawes Scholarship,
and staff donations endowing the other. We have also added
three awards honoring achievement in adapted sports and
recreation.
The Student Union
& Event Services and Campus Recreation Achievement Awards
provide scholarships for outstanding student employees.
Funds for these scholarships are now raised annually through
endowments, alumni contributions, the WSU Campus Scholarship
Campaign, as well as through the fund-raising efforts of
our Student CQI Team and other hard working student employees.
