WKEF: Marijuana remains banned on Wright State and UD despite Ohio's legalization

Recreational marijuana use is now legal in Ohio, but on some university campuses, it’s not.

For both Wright State University and the University of Dayton, policy has not changed. Any marijuana possession or use is still strictly prohibited on both campuses because the universities receive federal funding.

In messages sent out to students and staff, both UD and Wright State said marijuana possession and usage is still illegal federally. Since the universities receive federal funding, they must follow federal laws.

“To some people, it could be distracting," said Wright State Freshman Rubi Vega. "The smell is very distinct.”

Some students, Vega told Dayton 24/7 Now's Gwyneth Falloon, understand why the universities continue to prohibit marijuana on campus, but said they would be open to a policy change.

“Maybe the university could work on some outside spaces, in a controlled environment," Vega suggested. "It could be helpful for people who are in a situation where it does help them function on a day-to-day basis.”
