DDN: Nagy sees plenty to like after latest road win

Wright State let an 18-point second-half lead dwindle to three, gave up a robust 12 offensive rebounds and committed an untidy 15 turnovers — against a team in IUPUI that’s near the bottom of the Horizon League standings, ahead of just 0-22 Detroit Mercy.

Even though the Raiders won, 83-76, the subpar effort Sunday normally would turn coach Scott Nagy into a curmudgeon, highlighting his team’s shortcomings before acknowledging anything that went right.

But it was Nagy who was reminding his players not to lose sight of the big picture. It was a road win — something nobody in the league is collecting in great quantities — and it kept them in contention for a regular-season title.

“I don’t know if we were in a great spot emotionally,” Nagy said of the somber mood afterward.

“But when you look at having played at Cleveland State and winning in overtime and then playing in a fairly empty arena against a team that’s been struggling, it’s hard for anybody (to find motivation) — not just our players, but the coaches, too.

“I’m proud of our guys for figuring out a way to win. We got an 18-point lead, and we just kind of went stale offensively. But even though we didn’t play great, they did a nice job of holding on.”
