The Empowered Employee

Wright State University Human Resources is pleased to announce that we are launching the Empowered Employee “Modeling Winning Behaviors”. 

The program is designed to further empower our employees by enhancing their skills to better implement the university’s vision. The sessions consist of self-reflection, facilitated discussion, case studies and/or exercises designed to help employees explore the concepts that will help them understand how to model the winning behaviors needed to transform the university community. 

All sessions will be held at 2455 Presidential Drive, across from the universityPlease enter the front doors and follow the signs to the second floor.

The program consists of 11 face to face sessions and two online courses offered from September 2017- July 2018.  Each month we will offer two 90 minute sessions covering one of the topics listed below:

Dealing with Change

The only constant in today's workplace is change, and often it happens quickly, before we can mentally prepare.  Keeping the workplace running effectively means helping employees cope with those changes. During this class we will review the change process and tools to use to help you adjust and benefit from change.

Discover the Leader in You

When working with groups a 'people-specific' dynamic will occur that we may not be able to control, but we can manage: In discussing group and team development we will address some of the following issues:
• The dimensions of group structure- what do groups look like
• Group process- the patterns of interaction among group members as they do their jobs
• Group development, the stages and how they change over time. Assessment- where is your team currently
• Experiential exercise in team work
• Group dynamics and situational leadership
Understanding the human dynamics of groups will prepare each of us for more effective interactions which will increase productivity and team effectiveness.

Cultural Competence

A culturally competent employer is more prepared and better able to work in an environment that feels inclusive. In this session, we will:
• Uncover implicit and explicit biases and understand how these traits may work to dismantle trust and respect.
• Offer practical skills that may effectively help to recognize, interrupt and dismantle cultural insensitivity.  
• Create safe spaces to practice acquired tools for team building.
• Effectively employ the diversity afforded a culturally rich environment requires a clear understanding of terms, the development of specific skills and opportunities to practice within a safe environment.

Emotional Intelligence

Emotional intelligence (EQ) is the ability to identify, use, understand, and manage emotions in positive ways to relieve stress, communicate effectively, empathize with others, overcome challenges, and defuse conflict. We will focus on the key areas each of us are affected by EQ and increase our understanding of how this impacts us.  

Managing Up

Develop an understanding of the 'Managing Up' concept and why it's important. This training session will focus on:  
• Understanding your manager's priorities 
• Managing expectations of your manager
• Explore how to earn your manager's trust and respect

Personal Branding

Instructor: Katie Halberg, M.B.A., Director of Social Media, Office of Marketing, Office of the President, Wright State University

Exploring "Branding" with the use of Social Media, focus will primarily be on how to use LinkedIn to brand yourself, increase visibility, connect and network with various workgroups and organizations.  (LinkedIn & The Facebook Algorithm)


A University Policy is an approved written statement that (a) sets standards or procedures for academic and administrative functions of the university; (b) directs actions of faculty, staff, students and others who engage with the university or come onto its premises; and (c) applies university-wide, across colleges, schools and divisions. Policies that are specific to an individual college, school, department, division and/or unit are not subject to the university policy approval process, although university policies will supersede other policies in the event of conflicts. Key university policies and practices will be reviewed and discussed during this class.

Providing Excellent Customer Service

What does assisting a customer mean to you? The most common customer service situation is a customer or client seeking help. How do we get this interaction right?  We will explore and discuss tips to Better Customer Service and explore how to help our customers and improve our service level.

Understanding and Resolving Conflict

Conflict is a normal part of any healthy relationship. The key is not to avoid conflict, but to learn how to resolve it in a healthy way. When conflict is mismanaged, it can cause great harm to a relationship, but when handled in a respectful and positive way, conflict provides an opportunity to strengthen the bond between two people. Whatever the cause of disagreements and disputes, by learning effective ways to understand and resolve conflict, you can keep your personal and professional relationships strong and growing. This class is provided to help you understand and resolve conflict in an effective way.

Understanding Your Communication Style & Improving Listening

Having  a basic understanding of your communication style is very important to building relationships in your personal and professional life.  The ability to communicate effectively in the workplace is an essential life skill and everyone has their own style that can naturally be adapted to suit the different environments they operate in. Our need to educate, inform, persuade, or entertain drives our communications. 

Understanding/Managing Fiscal Accountability

Overview of key financial terminology and processes. The objective of this class is to increase your business acumen by focusing on:
• Understanding Budgeting, Planning and Accountability.
• Zero based budgeting methodology.
• Finance for nonfinancial experts - what you need to know.

2) Mosaic: Prevent Discrimination and Harassment Together

There is no cost for this program.  Space is limited to the first 30 people that register for each session. 

Faculty and staff that complete at least eight of the eleven in-person classes, plus two of our on-line courses, will receive a certificate of completion signed by President-Designate Cheryl B. Schrader and Shari Mickey-Boggs, Associate Vice President and Chief Human Resources Officer.
