Committee (WAC) -- Joe Law, Chair, was not able to attend but
submitted the following report on the WAC Recognition event of May 2
University General Education Committee (UGEC) -- Jean Edwards, Chair, reported that the first annual General Education event recognizing the contributions of faculty and staff to the success of the General Education Program was held on May 9, 2008. Dr. David R. Hopkins addressed the group on Ohio's strategic plan for high education, and Dr. Lillie Howard reviewed the history and purpose of Wright State's General Education Program. Dr. Robert Shoenberg, senior fellow of the Association of American Colleges and Universities, discussed the essential learning outcomes of the undergraduate experience in his presentation "Baccalaureate Education as General Education". Undergraduate Academic Program Review Committee (UAPRC) -- Susan Carrafiello, Chair continues to struggle to get colleges and their departments to submit the required reports. Being that faculty governance created the review process in response to the request of the Provost's Office, the committee believes that the Provost's Office can be of assistance in resolving the current and recurring problem on non responsiveness. Voluntary System of Accountability (Ad Hoc) Committee (VSAC) -- Joe Law, Chair, was not able to attend but it was noted that his UCAPC report of April 16 and its recommendations supported by UCAPC went before the Faculty Senate as New Business and will be voted upon at the June 2 Senate meeting. Specifically, the VSA Study Group recommends that the Collegiate Learning Assessment (CLA) exam be adopted for that purpose and that it be administered in the cross-sectional version. Of the three exams approved for this purpose, only the CLA is an entirely performance based exam, calling for students to synthesize information and produce a written argument that will be assessed by readers. The other exams are either partially or machine graded multiple choice exams. Course Inventory and Modification Requests CECS

Academic Policy Advanced Placement (AP) The OBR policy for establishing statewide AP scores for awarding course credits has been approved. However, official notification has not yet been received. The new policy and the current WSU AP scores and policy are as follows Any necessary changes in the WSU scores and policy will begin study with more specific directions from OBR. It was noted that more than a
year has passed since the EGR 100 Preparatory Mathematics for
Engineering and Computer Science proposal came before UCAPC. Per the
agreement of the CECS and the COSM it was tabled at the April
2007
meeting and following additional concerns and responses again at
the September
2007 meeting. UCAPC has now received concerns anew
regarding the inappropriateness of continuing to offer the course under
the auspices of the variable topics EGR 199. The committee agreed that
variable topics courses are not designed to be used in that manner and
respectfully requests
that the two colleges permanently resolve the curriculum matter before
UCAPC and
the scheduling of the Winter 2009 classes.
