Preparing Leaders for Life

The Office of Student Activities at Wright State University offers many creative and exciting opportunities that allow students to develop and enhance their personal philosophy of leadership (Council for the Advancement of Standards in Higher Education (CAS), Student Leadership Programs, 1997). We accomplish the above by sponsoring at and exposing our students to leadership training programs, educational opportunities, and development activities. Consider 2006, Wright State student leaders attended LeaderShape Institute, which is a national leadership training program. Also, in 2006 an Advanced Leadership Development course was created and launched for student leaders. To increase WSU students’ ability to solve various life problems and their commitment to community service, students will develop and implement programs that fulfill a campus community need. In the Office of Student Activities at Wright State University we are committed to using leadership development as a tool to prepare Wright State students for life. To find out how you can get involved stop by the Office of Student Activities 019 Student Union or email Elizabeth Beemer’ at beemer.3@wright.edu.

Leadership Recognition

In the spring the Office of Student Activities at Wright State University recognizes and awards students who have been commendable leaders. To nominate a student to be recognized for their leadership abilities or their commitment to community service, read over the award descriptions and submit your nominations to The Office of Student Activities located at 019 Student Union or email the nomination form to Elizabeth Beemer, at beemer.3@wright.edu . Any registered organization, student, faculty or staff may submit nominations beginning in  April 9th, 2007.

New Leaders

Emerging Leaders I and II are the foundation courses for the leadership development series at Wright State University. The Leadership Development series is designed and implemented by the Office of Student Activities. The classes are offered Winter and Spring quarters on Thursdays from 4pm-6pm. Upon completion of each course students will receive a letter grade and two college credits.

In Emerging Leaders I and II, students apply fundamental leadership concepts to an actual leadership-related situation in a student organization.  Through presentation of the five exemplary leadership practices, students will synthesize and clarify their understanding of leadership principles and the application to problems and issues in a student organization setting.  Through class participation and reflective journals students will gain practice in activities in which aspiring leaders must become proficient and will develop a much deeper understanding and appreciation of leadership, e.g. diversity, power, challenging the process, and risk taking.

For more information on either of the courses feel free to contact Elizbaeth Beemer at beemer.3@wright.edu
