SCHOLARSHIPS FOR INCOMING FIRST YEAR HONORS STUDENTS (Direct from High School)

Incoming Wright State University students are eligible to compete for Competitive Honors Scholarships, four-year awards that begin Fall 2012 and range in value from $2,500 up to the amount of in-state tuition, room/board, and books.  The online scholarship application deadline is February 15, 2012.   However, to ensure that your scholarship application reaches the selection committee in a timely fashion, submit a complete Undergraduate Admissions Application and copies of current transcripts from all institutions from which you have received college credit to the Office of Undergraduate Admissions by January 15.

The Online Competitive Honors/Trustees Scholarship Application must be completed by February 15.  You will need to have the following ready before you start your application (we recommend saving the information on your computer):

    • A list of extracurricular activities, community service, offices held, and awards or honors received.
    • The name, title, and contact information (mailing address, phone number, and email address) for one academic teacher or high school counselor who is willing to provide information about your classroom performance.  Your reference will be sent an email, asking him/her to complete an online academic recommendation for you.
    • A brief essay (500-600 words) on one of the following prompts:

-- What has been your best high school leadership experience and why?

-- If you had one day to spend as you wish, what would you do?

-- How do you think Wright State University and the University Honors Program can help you achieve your academic and personal goals?

Applicants not selected for a Trustees Scholarship will be considered for the approximately 70 Competitive Honors Scholarships to be awarded.  All applicants who meet the eligibility requirements will be reviewed by the selection committee.  Some finalists may be invited to campus for an interview with the selection committee. All applicants reviewed by the selection committee will be notified of award decisions by April 1, 2012. Recipients of Trustees and Competitive Honors Scholarships must complete the requirements for graduation as a University Honors Scholar. All Competitive Honors Scholarships are awarded as funds are available.

SCHOLARSHIP REQUIREMENTS

For All Honors Scholarships

All scholarship recipients are required to be registered as full-time students and to maintain a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0. The first term a student's cumulative GPA drops below 3.0, a warning is issued. The scholarship may be terminated if the student's GPA falls below 3.0 for a second term.

All recipients are expected to plan their schedules in close consultation with the University Honors Program. This means meeting annually to plan a program of study and reporting any deviations.

Students must earn As or Bs in Honors courses to count them toward the minimum number required by the terms of their scholarships or the number required for graduation with an Honors degree designation. Students who earn Cs in Honors courses may count these hours toward graduation and toward fulfilling university or major requirements.

Scholarship funds for payment of tuition and fees will not be released for students who fail to comply with any of these procedures.

For Competitive Honors Scholarships (including Trustees Scholarships)

Recipients are expected to:

    • Complete all requirements for graduation as a University Honors Scholar:
    • Complete six lower-level honors courses with A or B grade
    • -- Three of the six must count for General Education

-- One of the six must be UH 201, 202, or 203

    • Complete two UH 400 seminars with A or B grades
    • Complete an honors project and/or course requirements in the major

-- Entrance and GPA requirements vary

    • Participate in the University Honors Program while the award is in effect
    • Register as a full-time student
    • Maintain a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher
    • Earn at least 45 (quarter) credit hours each academic year
    • Meet regularly with the associate director of the University Honors Program to ensure satisfactory progress toward earning the University Honors Scholar degree designation
    • Satisfactory progress includes appropriate completion of honors coursework and written evidence of work on the departmental honors project

Recipients must complete the lower-level honors courses in a timely fashion. Although individual variations may occur, usually students will be expected to complete at least three Honors courses during the freshman year and three the sophomore year. Students who elect not to take a UH 400 seminar during the junior year must make careful scheduling plans to fit two UH 400 seminars into the senior curriculum.

At the end of the junior year, scholarship recipients must present written evidence of work on the departmental Honors project in the major before scholarship funds are released for the senior year.

Students who fail to comply with any of the above requirements will not receive Competitive Honors Scholarship funds.
