Pilot Resources
The following Pilot course templates were created to help faculty with the design and development of online course materials. Course templates are available in a 16 or 8 week format.
Design
- Optimizing High-Quality Digital Learning Experiences This digital resource helps guide faculty in thinking and designing strategically to amplify the opportunities the online environment provides in both their digital spaces and physical classrooms. By integrating teaching and design principles, this guide assists faculty in positively impacting student learning, especially for students who are minoritized because of race, gender, disability, or socioeconomic status.
- Delivering High-Quality Instruction Online in Response to COVID-19 This digital resource is a faculty-focused playbook intended to improve course design, teaching, and learning in online environments.
- Overview of Quality Matters Course Design Rubric (UCONN Center for Excellence in Teaching and Learning)—Quality Matters (QM) standards and guidelines in designing and delivering online courses. To plan your instructional materials, activities, and assessments, familiarize yourself with the QM Rubric.pdf.
- Understanding by Design (Vanderbilt University Center for Teaching) This site provides an overview of Understanding by Design, a book that is helpful in course planning.
- Designing a Course (BYU Center for Teaching and Learning) This site offers a brief overview of course design process that begins with developing significant learning outcomes and then designing engaging learning activities that allow students to engage in a meaningful way with the course content. Adapted from Fink (2003).
- Designing Your Course (Cornell University Center for Teaching Excellence) Resources from the Cornell Center for Teaching Excellence, including a downloadable syllabus template, Bloom’s Taxonomy of Educational Outcomes, a course materials checklist, and reflective course planning questions.
- Writing Clear and Measurable Goals and Objectives (UCONN Center for Excellence in Teaching and Learning)—Goals and objectives are the general intended purposes and desired achievements of a particular educational environment.

It specifically, examines strategies for aligning instructional content to learning objectives and applies a decision-making process to determine which synchronous and asynchronous activities are most appropriate to meet specific instructional goals.
