Introduction to WSU Alert

WSU Alert, Wright State's emergency notification system, is an ongoing effort to safeguard students, faculty, and staff from anticipated and unexpected threats. WSU Alert offers multiple channels for communicating notifications and information about real and potential life threatening situations to members of our university community.

In early 2011, a reduction in the number of text messages some of the major carriers would accept from us at one time resulted in unacceptable length of delivery times to many of you.  In response, Emergency Management contracted with Rave Mobile Safety, a leader in providing mass notification services to higher education. In addition to faster delivery rates to a wider list of cell phone carriers, you can manage your own WSU Alert account to add up to two more email addresses, three mobile phones to receive text and/or voice messages, and three voice only telephone numbers.

No single communications channel can be relied upon to notify everyone about an emergency. However, the likelihood of you receiving the notification increases when the message is provided via multiple communications channels. Remember, you can become an effective means of communicating an emergency notification. Be proactive and make sure those around you are aware of the emergency. Review Wright State's Emergency Action Plan for Dayton campus or Lake campus and become familiar with how you should respond to anticipated emergencies.

Many of the communications channels described below have been in place for some time and continue to support our day-to-day computing and telecommunications needs. When required, these channels can be utilized to send out alerts and provide updates and information about an emergency. Wright State has contracted with Rave Wireless to provide faster emergency text and voice messaging as well as feeds to Facebook and Twitter.

  • In Buildings

    Building Notification System

In addition to the tone and strobe alerts provided via the red fire alarm devices, spoken alert messages and response instructions can provide immediate information to building occupants in our Dayton and Lake campus buildings. Listen to some of the pre-recorded tones and messages below:

  • Email

    Official Listserv Email

Everyone who has a <name>@wright.edu email address will be sent emergency notifications via the Wright State email account. The WSU Alert notification service allows you to add additional email addresses. If you use another email provider for your primary account (Yahoo! mail, Gmail, etc.), set an email forward from your Wright State email account.

Note: Your official Wright State email address cannot be deleted. Changing an email address to correspond with a name change is managed through CaTS.

  • Text/Voice

    Text and Voice Messaging*

Students, faculty, and staff can sign up to be sent emergency text and voice messages on up to three cell or landline phones. Your service provider may charge a small fee when Wright State sends you an emergency text or voice message to your mobile device.

    * Important Information About Cellular Telephones
    • Cellular telephones, including text messaging, have proven to be unreliable, especially during emergencies when the number of calls made and messages sent can overload a carrier's system.  Cellular telephones and text messaging should not serve as your primary sources of emergency notification.
    • Wright State University utilizes numerous methods to notify students, faculty, and staff of an emergency, including weather-related closures and delays in opening. If you expect to receive an emergency voice or text message but one is not received, check other WSU Alert channels.
    • WSU Alert will be periodically tested. Depending on your account preferences, expect to receive a test message via each channel during each term except summer.
    • Depending on your service plan, your service provider may charge a small fee when Wright State sends you a voice or text message to your mobile device.
  • Radio & TV

    Local Radio & Television

Communications and Marketing maintains a close working relationship with radio and television stations in the Dayton and Celina area markets. Information regarding an emergency, campus closure, cancellation of classes, delays in opening, or other significant incidents affecting Wright State can be relayed through listed local media outlets.

  • Homepage

    Wright State Homepage/WINGS

The University Web Server is Wright State's primary online presence and will be used to provide information about an emergency, campus closure, cancellation of classes, delays in opening, or other significant incidents affecting the Dayton or Lake campus.

  • Info Lines

    Campus Information Lines

    Dayton Campus (937) 775-3500

The Dayton Campus Info Line is a voicemail mailbox that only contains a recorded message. That message will provide the current operational condition of the Dayton campus or convey information about an emergency, campus closure, cancellation of classes, delays in opening, etc.

    Lake Campus (800) 237-1477 or (419) 586-0300

The Lake Campus Info Line is answered by a Student Services representative during normal business hours and is forwarded to a voicemail mailbox after hours and weekends.  The representative or voice message will provide the current operational condition of the Lake campus or convey information about an emergency, campus closure, cancellation of classes, delays in opening, etc.

  • Social Media

    Facebook and Twitter

Wright State does not consider social media sites as primary methods of emergency notification. However, they do provide a means to send out information about an emergency as a secondary channel.
