Online Teaching and Learning Certificate
Participants will be provided training in how to effectively plan/deliver an online or web-enhanced course as well as how to utilize the University's course management system, WebCT.
To earn the OTL Certificate, participants must attend at least 14 hours of training from the following workshop selections: (No duplicate workshops).

Starting Your Web-Based Course on the Right Note
Start the quarter off right with this one-hour workshop for setting up web-enhanced and online courses. Learn how to register your course, add students, set up an online grade book, update the student database, post your syllabus, backup your course, and more This brief, hands-on workshop will guarantee a smooth start for your busy quarter.
Course Design for Web-Based Courses
Instructional planning and design are crucial components for successfully developing a web-based course and this three hour workshop will get you started on this process. During this session, we will explore learner analysis and course goals creation, working on defining learning objectives, and linking them with meaningful learning activities as you complete a storyboard for your web-based course.
Introduction to Course Management Software
This three-hour workshop provides beginning or returning users of WebCT an overview of the tools and best practices for creating web-enhanced courses. Participants will gain hands-on experience using a variety of web course enhancements including the calendar, syllabus, grade book, discussion forums, assignment drop box, student presentations, and mail. Course management procedures such as registering web-enhanced courses and managing student accounts will also be covered
Course Management for Web-Based Courses
This two-hour workshop focuses on organizing and managing content in web-based courses. Participants will learn how to use a variety of web course enhancements including the calendar, syllabus, grade book, discussion forums, assignment drop box, student presentations, and mail. Course management procedures such as registering web-enhanced courses and managing student accounts will also be covered.
Course Assessment for Web-based Courses
This two-hour workshop focuses on creating and managing online quizzes and surveys using the University's course management system, WebCT, and Respondus, a Windows application that enhances the functionality and usability of WebCT's testing tool. Participants will create a variety of test question types, import questions from text files (ideal for converting publisher test banks), insert mathematical and scientific symbols into test questions, and develop quizzes and surveys.
Communication Tools for Web-based Courses
Whether you are teaching in a web-enhanced, online, or face-to-face course, communication is a key component for student engagement and active learning. This two-hour workshop introduces the best practices for communicating in any course with an emphasis on web-enhanced or online courses. Participants will learn how to set up and maintain mail, discussion groups, and chat sessions. This workshop will also introduce what the latest research says about best methods for facilitating discussions and evaluating student posts in web-based courses.
Ending your Web-based Course on the Right Note
This one hour workshop will help you successfully close your web based course for the quarter. Topics covered include finalizing grade book calculations, backing up your course to archive the quarter's activities, and resetting the course for future use. This brief, hands-on session will leave you whistling a tune of relief at the end of a busy quarter.
Keeping Students Motivated in Online Classes
College students are attracted to online courses because of the convenience and flexibility they provide, but once students learn to log on and see that they still have to study and “attend” class, even if it is at their own convenience, some students lose interest. What can faculty do to keep students motivated when attendance is not mandatory? This two-hour workshop provides hands-on training for creating and adding innovative learning tools to web-enhanced or online classes. An overview of the latest research on how to keep students engaged in online courses will also be presented and discussed.
Course Building for Web-Based Courses
This two-hour workshop focuses on creating content and effectively managing it in your web-based courses. Topics covered in this session include creating web pages from a template, using Powerpoint, video, and audio to enhance online learning, and displaying your learning materials in WebCT.
