Benjamin Garchar '09, Motion Picture Production

"It allowed me to focus on honing my craft, and not worry about paying for my education."

Tell us more about you and your life, your profession, and your successes.

I'm living now in Brooklyn, New York. I’ve directed a number of short films that have played online, at festivals, and across the country. I’ve also been able to work as an editor with filmmakers such as Laura Poitras and Alex Gibney. Most recently I edited a feature film that premiered at BAM Cinemafest in Brooklyn.

What is your favorite Wright State memory?

The excitement of getting back developed black and white 16mm reversal film for the first time. Working with professors Julia Reichert and Steve Bognar on the Oscar nominated The Last Truck. Getting my mind blown about the possibilities of cinema the very first days of class with Dr. Chuck Derry.

What did receiving the ARTSGALA scholarship mean to you?

It allowed me to focus on honing my craft, and not worry about paying for my education, which has in turn has given me a career I love. What more can you ask for?
