Mathematics Requirement
All students at Wright State University must take a course to satisfy a mathematics requirement. The correct course depends upon your major. This page contains information on the six existing options and the pathways for completing the requirements. Contact your academic advisor to find out which option is appropriate for your major. Find your academic advisor. Your path to completion depends on your Math Placement Level (MPL). Visit the MPL Policy page to find out how your MPL is calculated.
College Algebra Pathway
If your MPL is 20 or lower:
- Register for MTH 1270, Introduction to Functions and Modeling (4 credits), and DEV 0270, Basic and Intermediate Algebra (2 credits)
- If you pass MTH 1270 with a C, register for MTH 1280, College Algebra (4 credits), and DEV 0280, Foundations for College Algebra (2 credits)
- If you pass MTH 1270 with a B or higher, register for MTH 1280, College Algebra (4 credits)
- If you fail MTH 1270, or only pass with a D, you must retake MTH 1270 before moving on to College Algebra (although a D in MTH 1270 may count for a core math course if you change majors - see your advisor)
If your MPL is 21:
- Register for MTH 1270, Introduction to Functions and Modeling (4 credits)
if your MPL is 24:
- Register for MTH 1280, College Algebra (4 credits), and DEV 0280, Foundations for College Algebra (2 credits)
If your MPL is 30:
- Register for MTH 1280, College Algebra (4 credits)
Additional Options
- Take the math placement assessment to increase your MPL.
- If you have taken basic or intermediate algebra at another institution, submit your course syllabus to your academic advisor for evaluation.
Quantitative Reasoning Pathway
If your MPL is 20 or lower:
- Register for DEV 0450, Foundations for Quantitative Reasoning (3 credits) and MTH 1450, Math and the Modern World (3 credits)
If your MPL is 21 or higher:
