With the addition of the 326 area code to the Dayton area in March 2020, our recommended format for phone numbers is changing.
The old format, (937) 775-NNNN, with the area code in parenthesis, implies an optional area code for local callers. Starting in February 2020, all calls will require 10-digit dialing whether local or long distance, making this implication obsolete.
Thus, our new recommended format for phone numbers is 937-775-NNNN. Please use this format going forward. Since this is a stylistic change, we aren't asking editors to go out of their way to change it before 2020, but do suggest you keep an eye out in the course of your day to day editing.
The Office of Marketing maintains an editorial style guide as a tool to help our departmental partners communicate with consistent style in matters like this. As of this writing, the guide is still being updated to reflect the new phone number style.
