Open Letter from the Dean of the College of Nursing and Health
May 9, 2012

Welcome to the Wright State University-Miami Valley College of Nursing and Health web page. I have now been the dean at the college since August 15, 2011 and we are doing some very exciting things I thought I would bring to your attention. First and foremost, based on the feedback from many of you, we are going to change the way we do admissions in the college. There are many highly capable individuals who are not being admitted that would make tremendous nurses, so we are going to broaden the criteria we use for admission. While we do have a committee that is working very hard on this issue, I would like to outline some of the things being discussed (proposed) which I think you will find agreeable. The committee will be making recommendations on admission prior to the end of the academic year which will be implemented for the group that is applying for admission in January, 2013.

  1. It is proposed that we look at your cumulative GPA and your program GPA.
  2. Students may be asked to write a short essay which will be reviewed by an admissions committee.
  3. It is always wise if you have questionable grades in one of the science courses, you would choose to repeat that course.
  4. On the table for discussion are personal interviews so you can show your ability to work with the public.
  5. You must successfully pass a background check as part of the admission process.
  6. The completion of a State Tested Nurses’ Aid course prior to enrolling in NUR 2100—so, condition of your admission.
  7. HESI entrance exam composite scores of at least 80%.

These are a few of the new criteria being discussed in an effort to better serve our community, our university college students, and our prospective nursing students. Nursing is a wonderful profession and many things make you a great nurse, some of which we will try to capture with the new criteria. We have also hired a Clinical Placement Coordinator to set up all of the clinical sites for training including some new and exciting opportunities. We are advertising for a Student Success Coordinator, who will be working very closely with students who are having difficulties. It is a great time to be a part of the College of Nursing and Health and we invite you to join us with a new and updated curriculum, increased collaborations with the Boonshoft School of Medicine, and a student friendly environment. Come see us and be a part of something great.
