Honors Institute

The eighth annual Honors Institute was held on March 7 and 8, 2013, and featured a Presidential Lecture Series keynote address by Neil deGrasse Tyson, astrophysicist and Frederick P. Rose Director of the Hayden Planetarium at New York City's American Museum of Natural History. The following day's symposium featured luncheon speaker Henry Fountain, New York Times science writer. 2012

Honors Institute

The seventh annual Honors Institute was held on March 1 and 2, 2012, and featured a Presidential Lecture Series keynote address by Robert Ballard, deep-sea explorer and discoverer of the Titanic. The following day's symposium featured luncheon speaker Cornelia Dean, New York Times science writer and author. Visit the Honors Institute website for details about this annual event.

 

Spring UH 202/203 Service Learning Class Trip

During Spring Break 2012 (March 16-22), fifteen students and their UH 202/203 instructors participated in a service learning experience in and around Athens, OH. The group bunked at Good Works, Inc. in Athens, a homeless shelter property, cooking meals daily for themselves and the residents. Each day they travelled to various sites in southeast Ohio to provide service or learn more about regional practices in coal mining, dairy farming, and sustainable agriculture.

 

June Honors Graduation Ceremony

On Thursday, June 7 the University Honors Program welcomed 145 new alumni to its ranks, a record number for any academic year! The ceremony, held in the Student Union Apollo Room, was attended by nearly 400 faculty, staff, students, family, and special friends. We were pleased to welcome back Danielle Rolfes ('97 B.S. Accountancy, University Honors Scholar), who provided inspiring remarks to those in attendance. Our sincere congratulations and best wishes to all!

2011

Honors Institute

The sixth annual Honors Institute was held on January 31 and February 1, 2011, and featured a Presidential Lecture Series keynote address by Charlayne Hunter-Gault, award-winning journalist and author. Monaqui Porter-Young, creative entrepreneur and Wright State alumna, was the featured luncheon speaker at the symposium luncheon, rescheduled for March 10 due to inclement weather. Fall Phi Kappa Phi Induction

The WSU Chapter of The Honor Society of Phi Kappa Phi inducted 148 new members at its November 2011 induction ceremony, including honorary inductee Katie Deedrick, Wright State University Director of Student Support Services. Congratulations to all!


2010

Honors Institute

The fifth annual Honors Institute was held on February 16 and 17, 2010, and featured a Presidential Lecture Series keynote address by James Fallows, national correspondent for The Atlantic. On February 17, Minxin Pei, an expert on China, Taiwan, East Asia, and democracy, was our featured luncheon speaker at the day-long symposium. Mid East Honors Association Annual Conference

The 32nd annual meeting of MEHA was held in Louisville, KY, March 26-28, 2010, at the historic Brown Hotel. This year's theme was "A League of Our Own: Hitting it Home with Honors!"  Honors students Baylee Butler, Ronak Ghiya, Wesam Helou, and Brandy Zapata, along with Honors staff Susan Carrafiello and Alex Wenning, presented a panel discussion on "Exploring the Depths of the Wright State Honors Program." In addition, Wesam Helou led an individual discussion featuring his research on heart pacemakers.

 

June Honors Graduation Ceremony

On Thursday, June 10 the University Honors Program welcomed 84 new alumni to its ranks! The ceremony, held in the Student Union Apollo Room, was attended by nearly 300 faculty, students, and special friends. Among the many recognitions that day, the University Honors Program was pleased to honor Dr. Lillie Howard, Senior Vice President for Curriculum and Instruction and Professor of English, upon her retirement after 35 years of service to Wright State University. Congratulations and best wishes to all!

 

Fall Phi Kappa Phi Induction

The WSU Chapter of The Honor Society of Phi Kappa Phi inducted 148 new members at its November 2010 induction ceremony, including honorary inductees Douglas Boyd (alumna), Haibo Dong (mechanical engineering), and Thomas Rooney (biological sciences).  Congratulations to all inducted!

 

November Honors Graduation Ceremony

On Thursday, November 18, 2010, the University Honors Program celebrated the accomplishments of 19 University Honors Scholars, Departmental Honors Scholars, and General Studies Honors Scholars.  Many faculty, family, and friends joined us for the occasion and enjoyed remarks by Dr. Thomas Sudkamp, Associate Provost for Undergraduate Studies and University College.  Congratulations to our newest graduates!

 

Costa Rica

In December 2010, University Honors Program students joined other WSU students on the trip of a lifetime, the Ambassador Program to Costa Rica. Students spent three weeks in paradise while taking a course in Travel Literature (UH 201) and brushing up on their Spanish skills. Led by Professor Robert (Bobby) Rubin, students stayed with host families and visited Manuel Antonio National Park, which is a pristine beach and rainforest.  Among the other sites visited were the Poas Volcano, a coffee plantation, Tirimbina Rainforest Preserve, and several museums in the capital city of San Jose.


2009

Honors Institute

The 2009 Honors Institute was held on January 26 and 27 and featured Nicholas Kristof, two-time Pulitzer Prize winner and columnist for The New York Times.  His keynote address on January 26 focused on the genocide in Darfur and human rights in the developing world. Mid East Honors Association Annual Conference

The Mid East Honors Association held its 2009 conference in Kalamazoo, MI, on March 27-29. Alex Wenning, assistant director of the University Honors Program, and five representatives from the Student Honors Association--Baylee Butler, Michael Mayor, Brett Oetzel, Heather Spangler, and Brandy Zapata--participated in a panel presentation entitled "Integrating Service Learning into First Year Learning Community Courses."

Fall Phi Kappa Phi Induction

The WSU chapter of The Honor Society of Phi Kappa Phi inducted 109 new members at its November 2009 induction ceremony, including honorary inductees Roberta Boyd (liberal arts), Robert Fyffe (medicine), Kathleen Koenig (science and math), and Alex Wenning (Honors).  

 

November Honors Graduation Ceremony

On Friday, November 20 the University Honors Program celebrated and honored the accomplishments of its 24 newest graduates. More than 75 faculty, family, and friends joined us for this special occasion, where we also recognized Mary Kenton for her 30+ years of service to the Honors Program. (Mary plans to retire at the end of February 2010.) Congratulations to all!


2008

Honors Institute

The 2008 Institute on "Creating Sustainable Environments" was held January 28 and 29 and featured a keynote address by Dr. Jared Diamond, Pulitzer Prize recipient and award-winning academic, and a luncheon address by Ms. Carolyn Watkins, Chief of the Ohio EPA's Office of Environmental Education, at the day-long symposium.

Fall Phi Kappa Phi Induction

The WSU chapter of The Honor Society of Phi Kappa Phi inducted 122 new members at its November 2008 induction ceremony, including honorary inductees Stuart McDowell (theatre), Kathy Keister (nursing), and John Stireman III (biology).  In January, members were invited to attend the 2009 Honors Institute on Free Speech in a Global Society, including the private reception with Nicholas Kristof, which the chapter sponsored.

 

Fall UH 101 Service Project

Nicole Berry's UH 101 students, along with students and staff from other universities, spent several hours on October 25, 2008, volunteering at Cox Arboretum.  Part of National Make a Difference Day, volunteers transported piles of soil to a forested area in preparation for spring flowers.  This work, completed in three hours, would have taken arboretum staff a full week to accomplish.

 

Student Activities

In Fall 2008, Faculty-in-Residence Jane Blakelock led a group of Honors Community students on a hike in Glen Helen in Yellow Springs. Of course, the outing ended with a trip to the "famous" Young's Dairy for treats.

Italy

Students of Honors Director Dr. Susan Carrafiello (HST) and Honors Faculty-in-Residence Jane Blakelock (ENG) participated in a study abroad experience in Italy.  The cross-discipline classes visited Florence, Siena, Cortona, Assisi, and Rome from December 2-15, 2008.  Click here to read the students' blog.

June Honors Graduation Ceremony

 

Vive la France!

Stephanie Bienz (senior, modern languages) participated in the Student Ambassador Program to France in July 2007 for Paris and Basque country cultural studies. The group's first week was spent in Paris, then in St. Jean de Luz/Cibourne (in the south of France in an area known as Basque country), and then back to Paris for the Bastille Day celebrations on July 14. Below are a few pictures that Stephanie shared with us. Vive la France!

Smith Receives Award

Amanda Smith received the 2006 WSU and State of Ohio Student Employee of the Year Award for being an outstanding employee for implementing a student careers/college planning survey used at more than 40 high schools in southwest Ohio.
