CHM 1020 4 Elementary Organic Chemistry with Applications An elementary discussion of the structure of hydrocarbons, organic functional groups, and a few selected reactions. Prerequisite: high school chemistry or CHM 1010
CHM 1050 4 Chemistry of Our World: Living Things Examination of the principles of covalent bonding, structures, and reactions of molecules important to living things, with attention to the technological, regulatory, and social complexities of problems related to them.
CHM 1210 3 General Chemistry 1 Examination of chemical principles such as atomic structure, bonding models, chemical structures, basic reactions, stoichiometry, and basic concepts in organic chemistry. Prerequisite: high school chemistry or CHM 1010 and Math Placement Level 4 or MTH 1260
CHM 1210L 2 General Chemistry Lab 1 Examination of the principles of General Chemistry I through experimentation. Corequisite: CHM 1210
CHM 1220 3 General Chemistry 2 Continuation of CHM 1210. Topics include properties of liquids, solids and solutions, phase changes, chemical kinetics and equilibrium, acid/base chemistry and its applications, thermodynamics and electrochemistry.
CHM 1220L 2 General Chemistry Lab 2 A laboratory course to reinforce lecture topics in CHM 1220 and to provide an introduction to quantitative analytical chemistry. Corequisite: CHM 1220

CHM 2450 3.5 Concepts in Chemistry I for Early and Middle Childhood Education An accelerated treatment of fundamental concepts and applications of chemistry for elementary education majors. Those concrete observable topics most appropriate for presentation to elementary and middle school students will be emphasized. Demonstrations and activities are used extensively. For elementary education majors.
CHM 3120 2 Quantitative Analysis Introduction to chemical methods of analysis covering traditional as well as modern techniques and equipment; emphasis on calculations and the interpretation of analytical data. Prerequisite: CHM 1220, 1220L. Corequisite: CHM 3120L

For Middle Childhood Majors pursuing science concentration.
CHM 3510 3 Physical Chemistry I: Thermodynamics and Kinetics A theoretical study of thermodynamics applied to chemical systems:  solids, liquids, gases and mixtures thereof and of the kinetic rates and mechanisms of chemical reactions in the gas phase and in solutions. Prerequisite: CHM 1220, MTH 2310, PHY 2401 Corequisites: CHM 3510L

CHM 4020 3 Environmental Chemistry and Analysis This course will provide a general understanding of what happens to chemicals in the environment and how xenobiotics (chemical foreign to living systems) react and interact with natural systems to create environmental problems. Students will develop an understanding of the chemical nature of air, water, and soil; select appropriate methods for sampling and analysis of environmental samples; interpret the physical and chemical properties of a substance to predict its fate; and predict how chemical degrade and move in the environment.
CHM 4200 3 Inorganic Chemistry 1 Principles and concepts of inorganic chemistry including the periodic table, atomic structure, chemical bonding, coordination compounds, and an introduction to group theory. Prerequisites:  CHM 3520
CHM 4610 2 Synthetic Polymer Chemistry Step-growth and chain-growth polymerization in homogeneous and heterogeneous media; properties of commercial polymers. Prerequisite: CHM 2120 or permission of instructor.
CHM 4680 3 Experimental Nanomaterials and Nanoscience Laboratory experiments include fabrication of nanomaterials such as metal nanoparticles and graphene nanoplatelets; characterization of physical and chemical properties by using techniques such as Raman spectroscopy, atomic force microscopy, terahertz spectroscopy, electrochemical analyses and computational modeling of nanoscale physical phenomena

CHM 6500 4 Concepts in Chemistry II for Middle Childhood Education Concepts in chemistry II is for graduate students in middle childhood science education (MST Program). Course includes detailed study of chemical reactions, kinetics, environmental issues, acids/bases, and nuclear chemistry. Portfolio development will be utilized for students to learn the development of inquiry activities for the classroom.
CHM 6550 2 Chemical Microscopy with Applications Examination of microscopy instrumentation and its applications to the study of surface and interface chemistry. The course will cover fundamentals of instrumentation design and methods. Topics will focus on scanning probe microscopy and its applications, particularly to solid-fluid interfaces.
