Wright State University Staff Council Minutes
Wednesday, September 24, 2008
The WSU Staff Council met on Wednesday, September 24, 2008, at 2:30 pm, in
Room 267 University Hall.
Present: Council Members: Rob Boley, Barbara Bullock, George Collins, Mary Healea, Joanie Hendricks, Fran Keeley, Curt Pederson, Beth Pierce, Vickie Slone, and Chris Wydman; Convener, Bill Rickert, and Staff Liaison, Albert Bondurant
Guest: Dr. Marshall (Chip) Montrose, Professor and Chair of Molecular and Cellular Physiology at the University of Cincinnati, who is this year’s participant in the Ohio Academic Leadership Academy (OALA) assigned to WSU.
Bill Rickert asked all the 2008-09 WSU Staff Council members to introduce themselves, since some are new to the Council this year.
1. Healthcare Plan Update
Bill Rickert announced that beginning January 2009 the current Anthem health-care coverage will still be available, and the Anthem High Deductible Health Plan (HDHP) with a Health Savings Account (HSA) Plan will be another option for employees. Informational materials on these options are being finalized in Human Resources and will be distributed to employees soon. Informational meetings will also be held soon to answer questions employees might have about their healthcare options. Bill stated that Human Resources is waiting for final decisions regarding plan design and costs.
All agreed that employees need information about these options as soon as possible to allow them to make informed decisions about their healthcare. Because some employees’ spouses have open enrollment in October or November, receiving WSU’s information soon is urgent.
The Dental and Vision Plans will not be changed for 2009.
2. Short-Term Disability
Bill Rickert said that a short-term disability plan will be available by the end of October 2008. A brochure is being worked on now. The cost of the plan will be based on income. This is a voluntary group plan paid for by the individual, which will provide 60% of a person’s pay while on short-term disability. The plan will initially be available to employees with only a few years at the university, since they are most likely to need the coverage. If the needed enrollment is met with this group, then coverage can be extended more broadly.
3. Staff Liaison’s Role
The Staff Liaison as of July, 2008 is Albert Bondurant, Director of Organizational Development and Learning. He reports directly to Bill Rickert, Associate Provost; his office is located in 131 Allyn Hall. Albert can be reached at x4607 or by email to email@example.com. Council asked that he attend WSU Staff Council meetings.
Albert spoke about the wide range of issues staff members have brought to him. He has given advice to these individuals and has kept anonymity for them, unless they requested otherwise. Bill said that staff members have been pleased with these services.
Council members were concerned that there had been only one communication to staff about Albert’s role as staff liaison. Human Resources is developing FAQs for their website that will incorporate this information. CSAC & USAC will also put Albert’s information on their websites.
4. Staff Pioneers Project
Chris Wydman is collecting names for the Staff Pioneers Wall project. He said he has found, in old WSU records, around 100 names of staff members from 1964-1967. He is chairing the committee to implement the project that includes classified and unclassified staff and retirees. It was suggested that names from the Lake Campus should be included if the Faculty Pioneers Wall included them.
Chris said that the unveiling ceremony of the Wall of Staff Pioneers will be held on April 21, 2009, in the Formal Lounge of the Student Union. The Provost will speak along with several Staff Council members. He will ask for a subcommittee to discuss invitations, etc.
5. Human Resources Leave Policies
The Council was informed that Human Resources presented the Wright Way Policies on Leave to the WSU Cabinet. Cabinet members agreed that the policies look fundamentally OK, and to move ahead. The update will go into Wright Way Policies before the end of calendar year 2008. The updated policies were not distributed at this meeting; there was no discussion by the Council.
6. Staff Survey Follow up
Bill Rickert informed the council that Human Resources has hired one new rep and plans to hire another person in compensation and benefits. The first step was taken to reorganize the HR website to be more user focused. Bill further informed the Council that the Provost is also discussing issues raised by the survey with vice presidents and deans.
The Council discussed ways to communicate the actions being taken to the staff, including a message on the official list serve and a Dialogue article. A Communications and Marketing reporter can talk to Fran Keeley, Barbara Bullock, Joanie Hendricks, and Chris Wydman about the staff survey. The article can include a list of the committee members who worked on it. Robert Sweeney might be a good contact person for these efforts.
The meeting was adjourned at 4:00 pm. The next meeting of the WSU Staff Council will be on Wednesday, November 12, 2008.
