Cameos of Caring

Evelyn Ogan - Kettering Health Network, Southview Medical Center

Recognition Year:
2020

Evelyn is an amazing night shift charge nurse at Southview Medical Center. Her co-workers call her “a shining star” for her unit, and hail her as a wonderful leader, mentor, and teacher. On some of the busiest nights, Evelyn takes a full assignment, interprets for patients, and still manages to support novice staff members by attending their deliveries. She exemplifies the meaning of caring with every interaction and is often acknowledged by patients for her kindness and knowledge. Evelyn was honored with a Constellation Award for her participation in the palliative care of a newborn not expected to live after birth. The newborn’s family was Hispanic and did not speak English, and Evelyn served as a communication bridge between the family and the clinical team. “This job is not as easy as it seems,” Evelyn states, “but it is a lifelong, gratifying career. You are going to face many challenges, but the reward is immeasurable.” Evelyn advises new nurses to empower and help their fellow team members. She also teaches them to learn the most from their work experiences and try to incorporate that knowledge into their daily practice.
