Research:
Closely related species arise from a common ancestor and then evolve through separate histories of mutation and selection. Within this context, the fidelity of interactions within adaptive gene in complexes must be maintained. To achieve this, deleterious mutations may be eliminated by negative selection or compensated for by positive selection for mutations in other genes. Independent histories of deleterious and compensatory mutations allow for divergence of adaptive gene complexes in diffferent species. We study the evolution of adaptive gene complexes in Caenorhabditid nematodes through phenotypic characterizations of intraspecific variation in development and reproductive isolation.
