Cyber Security

Cyber Warfare

Information Assurance

Over the past two years we have turned our attention toward the work domain of Cyber Operations, collaborating with colleagues at Wright Patterson Air Force Base, the Wright State Research Institute, Trimetis, Centre for Defense Enterprise (UK) and local businesses (including a position as a Fellow in the Summer Faculty Fellowship Program, Air Force Office of Scientific Research).

Cyber operations are becoming increasingly critical for business, government and individuals alike. Cyber Warfare can be defined as the execution of military operations in cyberspace. Cyber Security (also referred to as information assurance or computer network defense) is the protection of computerized information assets.

Concerns about cyber security have become acute. Corporate and personal security breaches (e.g., identity thefts) are increasing in an exponential fashion; military security breaches are seen as having the potential to produce catastrophes similar to “Pearl Harbor.” The problem will not go away; there is a growing realization that it needs to be addressed quickly.

We have began to apply the CSE / EID framework to address these some of the associated challenges. We have leveraged our experience in military command and control to develop a prototype ecological interface for computer network defense, referred to as the VEILS (Versatile Ecological Interface for Lockdown network Security) interface.

This interface supports cyber security / information assurance / CND by collecting and integrating network defense information from a variety of sources including intruder detection / protection systems, firewalls, and network system logs.

The ultimate goal of our work is to allow cyber operators to see the answers to difficult problems directly in the interface (instead of mentally deducing them); we want them to be able to navigate through the interface with the same grace and ease with which they navigate through man-made or natural ecologies.
