Staff Council met April 10, 2013 at 2:00p.m. in 267 University Hall

Members present: Craig This, David Bringhurst, Audwin Jones, Kym Sellers, Elizabeth Styers, Mary Raider, Vickie Slone, Susan Wehmeyer, Lena Friend, Pat Fox, Megan McCurdy, and  Mark Hibner by phone

Guests:  S. Narayanan, Provost and Henry Limouze, Associate Provost for Faculty & Staff Affairs

1)    Council members introduced themselves to Provost Narayanan and gave a brief explanation of what USAC and CSAC do.  Provost Narayanan spoke about the need for collaborative effort and constant dialogue to meet the challenges we face as an institution.  Council members raised questions/issues for the Provost such as the lack of a significant percentage of time on the position description for the Associate Provost for Faculty & Staff Affairs being devoted to time with staff issues and the need for a development of entrance and exit surveys for staff and faculty.  Council also asked that the Provost come to them with opinions and advice and offered that timely responses to requests are important to moving forward.

2)    Staff Development Day

Staff Council would like to have a staff support person who would have some portion of their position dedicated to assisting with Staff Development Day as the project is difficult for volunteers to manage.  Henry asked for a proposal that clearly indicates the areas for which help is needed.  The next SDD is scheduled for August 9 so some decision or progress toward a decision needs to be made soon.

3)    Other discussion

The question was asked if there would be changes in the relationship/structure of HR and OD&L.  Henry responded that he didn’t know but it was quite possible.

The issue of a represented staff member who was reprimanded for reporting to work at the regularly scheduled time on a day when the University was delayed was raised.  Henry will look into this.

Regarding the search for Associate Provost for Faculty & Staff Affairs, three candidates have been selected for interview next week and Open Forums will likely be held the following week

The latest draft of the Winter Leave announcement is being reviewed by the Provost and Robert Sweeney and should be out very soon.

The next step in the Wellness Program is the hiring of the coordinator.  There is a very deep pool of applicants.  The coordinator, once hired, will work with the Task Force to determine next steps.

The next scheduled meeting of Staff Council is Wednesday, May 8, 2013 from 2:00 – 4:00 in 267 University Hall.
