Forest Lane Apartment Check Out

Spring Check-Out Packet 2019 


  1. To maintain a considerate study atmosphere for all residents, twenty-four hour quiet hours will be in place for finals week beginning on Friday, April 26, 2019, at 11:59 p.m.
  2. Residents who are not remaining on campus for summer classes must check-out by 8pm Friday May 3, 2019. Any resident who has not completed the check-out procedure by the deadline may be billed a $150.00 fee for an improper check‑out.

  3. Residents who need to checkout late Friday, May 3, 2019 8pm to Saturday, May 4, 2019 3pm will need to receive advance approval from the Community Director by Friday, April 26, 2019.  International residents with flights out of the country should contact the Community Director to receive special instructions.

  4. Please take the time to clean.  If the apartment is left dirty, the cleaning will be billed back at $40.00 per hour. 

  5. All residents will need to schedule a checkout appointment with their Resident Assistant at least 48 hours before the desired checkout date.  Failure to set up an appointment 48 hours in advance could result in a $25.00 improper check-out fine. 

  6. Residents who have signed up to stay for the summer are not allowed to hold or store other resident’s belongings in the summer apartment.  Returning residents for Fall semester without a summer housing contract must completely move-out of the apartment for the summer. Summer storage of personal items in the apartment is not allowed.  

  7. Mail forwarding: In Wings Express update your WSU mailing override and primary addresses.

  8. At Check-out all residents must turn in the “Checkout Damage/Repair” form attached to the back of this document.  Please identify to your Resident Assistant any damages or repairs needed in your room and record them on your checkout form.  Damages not claimed will be evenly divided and billed between the current residents of the apartment. Please settle any discrepancies before your roommates' check out.

  9. Goodwill Donations: Please give your unwanted usable items and unwanted canned food a 2nd life and donate them to be reused. Place them in the Forest Lane Community Center and we will transport them to Goodwill and the University Food Pantry.

  10. All trash bags should be disposed of in the trash dumpsters.  If the dumpster is full please go to another dumpster and please do not leave the bag on the ground.

Cleaning the Apartment

___ Clean the doors in your apartment. Clean and remove any marks, being especially careful near the handles, edges, and along bottom. Window and household cleaners work well for removing most marks.

___ Clean the windows and sills so they are free of dust and dirt. Wash the inside of the windows only.

___ All unauthorized paint, stickers, picture hangers, decals, etc., must be removed from the walls, windows, mirrors, furniture and doors.  Do not try to fill or patch nail or fist holes in the drywall.

___ Vacuum, Sweep and mop the entire apartment. Vacuum under and around all furniture.  Vacuum under the furniture cushions.  All carpet stains and high traffic areas should be cleaned. 

___ Remove all personal belongings from the building.  Remove your bike from the bike rack.  Bikes left for the summer might be removed and disposed of.

___ Dust off all closet shelves.

___ Empty out and dust out all drawers.

___ Return all university furniture to its proper location.

___ Take down and clean out all the dust and dead bugs that are in the light globes.  Turn the light off and let the glass globe cool down before you handle it.

Cleaning the Bathroom

___ Clean bathroom fixtures incluing the sink, toilet, bathtub, shower stall, etc.  Clean off all soap scum buildup from the shower walls. Use mildew/mold remover.  Clean all the dirt and soap scum off the sink and bathtub.  Clean the entire toilet not just the seat and the bowl. 

___ Clean mold off shower curtain.  Sweep and mop the bathroom floor.

___ Clean the sink, counter and area under the sink.  Clean the mirror.  Dust off the light globe.

Cleaning the Kitchen

___ Remove all food items from the refrigerator and clean all the shelves and trays. Take the crisper drawers out and clean under them.  Check the butter door.  Use household cleaner or mild soap and water.  

___Please leave the refrigerator plugged in and ON,  and set on “3”.

___ Clean the oven and stove.  Make sure you clean the drip pans and under the burners; use oven cleaner and SOS steel wool pads.  Clean exhaust fan screen above stove; use hot soapy water.  All baked-on food should be removed from the oven, drip pans, racks and elements.

___ Clean exteriors of all appliances and kitchen sink using household cleaner or mild soap and water. 

___ Double check all items have been removed from the dishwasher, cabinets and on top of the cabinets. 

___ All trash bags should be disposed in the dumpsters. Trash or abandoned items left in the building will be identified back to an apartment and that apartment will be billed at least $25.00. 


___ On your scheduled checkout day and time an RA will come to your apt to check you out.  Residents must remove all personal belongings from the unit prior to turning in their key for checkout (or they may incur an improper checkout fine.)

___ Once you check-out, you are not allowed to stay in the apartment or store any items in the apartment.  Any items left behind will be disposed of.   Please double check the apartment carefully before you checkout.

___ After your check-out, the Resident Assistant and the Maintenance Team will review your unit's condition and inventory forms.  They will adjust the check-out inventory as needed. Any damages unclaimed on the inventory forms will be shared among the residents of the unit.


Recommended Cleaning Products:

  • Lime Away - Shower, faucets, and toilets-removes mold, water deposits, and soap scum.              
  • Soft Scrub - fiberglass showers and sinks.
  • Fantastic - general cleaning (counter tops, etc.).       
  • Windex-windows, mirrors, microwave, and general purpose.
  • Mr. Clean - kitchen bathroom floors, and general cleaning
  • Simple Green- good all purpose cleaner -(does not contain bleach). 

***CAUTION: Never use bleach products around upholstery, mattresses, or carpeted areas-can cause damages***             

                               To help cut costs, residents should try to share cleaning products.
