Cost of Attendance Adjustment

On this page:

Overview

When awarding your financial aid, the Office of Financial Aid will assign you a budget for the aid year, often referred to as a cost of attendance (COA). The COA includes an allowance for:

  • Tuition
  • Books and supplies
  • Housing and board (meals)
  • Transportation
  • Personal expenses

Sometimes you may incur additional educationally-related expenses for the aid year that are not included in the COA. A COA adjustment would allow the Office of Financial Aid to increase your COA to include the additional costs you've incurred and have your financial aid awards re-evaluated.

COA Adjustment Policy

Annually, and on a case-by-case basis, the Office of Financial Aid may increase your COA to include additional educationally-related expenses you've incurred during the aid year, provided you've been awarded financial aid. The 2023–24 aid year includes Summer 2023, Fall 2023, and Spring 2024.

Additional educationally-related expenses for which you may request an increase to your COA include:

  • Additional costs above the cost of tuition and fees and books and supplies that are associated with your program of study (e.g., senior project costs, work experience, etc.).*
  • Actual costs for tuition, room, and board above COA that are associated with your Wright State bill.
  • If you have a disability, school-related costs incurred because of your disability (e.g., special services, personal assistance, equipment, etc.) that are not covered by a third party.
  • Cost for the purchase or rental of a computer.
  • Unusually high child care or dependent care costs not covered by a third party.
  • Student health insurance added to your Wright State bill.

How to Apply

You must complete and return the 2023–24 Cost of Attendance Adjustment Form and supporting documentation to RaiderConnect by April 1, 2024. The submission of a Cost of Attendance Adjustment Form does not guarantee your COA will be adjusted. See our Important Dates page for processing timelines for Cost of Attendance Adjustments and other financial aid documents.

Upon receipt of your Cost of Attendance Adjustment Form, the Office of Financial Aid will review your expenses and supporting documentation. If you have additional expenses that qualify for a COA adjustment and you've been awarded financial aid, the Office of Financial Aid will adjust your COA and re-evaluate your financial aid awards for the aid year.

You will be notified via your Wright State email account when the result of your Cost of Attendance Adjustment Form is available to view in WINGS Express.

Study Abroad

Annually, and on a case-by-case basis, the Office of Financial Aid may increase your COA to include additional study abroad-related expenses you’ve incurred during the aid year. The 2023–24 aid year includes Summer 2023, Fall 2023, and Spring 2024.

How to Apply

If you will incur additional expenses, as a result of a Wright State-affiliated study abroad program, and wish to be considered for a cost of attendance increase, complete the 2023-24 Study Abroad Cost of Attendance form and include supportive documentation of the additional costs by April 1, 2024.

Upon receipt of your Cost of Attendance Adjustment Form, the Office of Financial Aid will review your expenses and supporting documentation.

You will be notified via your Wright State email account when the result of your Cost of Attendance Adjustment Form is available to view in WINGS Express.

Supporting Documentation

You are required to submit supporting documentation with your Study Abroad Cost of Attendance Adjustment Form. Please refer to the chart below to determine appropriate documentation based on the study abroad program type.

Study Abroad Program Type Requested Documentation
Ambassador Program Ambassador Program Brochure and/or printout of Airline Ticket Cost
Exchange Program Written Statement from UCIE Office that itemizes the study abroad costs for the Exchange Program
Third-Party Program (AIFS, ASA, CIS Abroad, Global Links, ISA, SFS, Semester at Sea, USAC, etc.) Budget Sheet from Third-Party Program that itemizes the study abroad costs (online printout is acceptable)

Please note: An increase in your COA may not result in a change to your financial aid awards depending on the type and amount of award. In most cases, the increase allows you to either borrow additional alternative loan funds or, if a dependent student, for your parent to borrow additional Parent PLUS loan funds.
