As a reminder, this Summer CaTS is replacing all classroom Mac Minis with Windows-based Dell 5050s. Additionally, all registrar-scheduled classrooms will be upgraded to Windows 10.

You can check the status of this upgrade at https://www.wright.edu/information-technology/services/summer-2018-class...

For Mac Users Using a USB Drive

CaTS recommends putting your classroom materials into Pilot to access during your class. However, if you will be using a USB drive, test your course content before Fall Semester to make sure it's formatted correctly in Windows 10. There are two options available:

  1. Come to the Help Desk during our open hours and test content using a self-service cart set up in 025 Library Annex.
  2. Schedule a one-on-one training session in your classroom using the Classroom Training Request form. Check the schedule in the Electronic Classrooms and Computer Lab Upgrade Schedule linked above to ensure your training date is after the upgrade has been performed in your classroom.

Classroom Equipment Training

To schedule a training session for classroom equipment, contact cats-training@wright.edu; a CaTS training representative will contact you shortly to arrange a session in your Fall Semester clasroom.

Windows 10 Training

Formal, stand-up training sessions for Windows 10 are currently being offered by CaTS. To view training dates, visit https://www.wright.edu/information-technology/services/windows-10-upgrad...

Windows 10 Upgrade

Instructor Station Computer Change

CaTS will be replacing existing classroom Mac Minis with Windows-based Dell 5050s. This plan has been vetted through various college computing committees, the Faculty Senate IT Committee, and Faculty Senate.

There will no longer be an option to use Mac OS from the instructor workstation unless using one of the alternatives listed at https://www.wright.edu/information-technology/services/summer-2018-class....

More information regarding this transition is available at https://www.wright.edu/information-technology/services/summer-2018-class....

To view a list of classroom upgrade dates, visit https://www.wright.edu/information-technology/services/summer-2018-class.... CaTS will also send weekly emails through the end of August regarding these changes.

Windows 10 Migration

As announced on July 12, CaTS will begin the migration from Windows 7 to Windows 10. All existing computer labs and registrar-scheduled classroom instructor workstations will be upgraded before the Fall 2018 Semester.

Windows 10 is the latest operating system released by Microsoft and features cosmetic differences from Windows 7. This transition is necessary due to Microsoft's planned end of support of Windows 7 in January 2020.

All registrar-scheduled electronic classrooms will now run Windows 10.

Classroom Training

To schedule a training session for the new instructor computers, or any classroom equipment, contact cats-training@wright.edu; a CaTS training representative will contact you shortly to arrange a session in your Fall Semester classroom.

All classrooms & computer labs will be unlocked beginning August 20, Monday-Friday 8:00am-5:00 pm, if you wish to test the new equipment. If you would like access to a classroom or computer lab during normal business hours before August 20, please contact the CaTS Help Desk to request access.

With an anticipated increase in the number of classroom-related calls during the first two weeks of the semester, CaTS strongly encourages faculty to become familiar with the new instructor computers prior to the beginning of Fall Semester.

Monthly Security Reminder: June 2018

Tuesday, June 26, 2018

Data Classification and Risk

Welcome to the June 2018 edition of the Monthly Security Reminders email, brought to you by Wright State's Chief Information Security Officer. This newsletter will provide you with tips, best practices, and guidelines for how to better secure both your personal and university data. This month's focus is on data classification and risk.

All universities manage large amounts of data, which falls under one regulation or another. A few examples include:

  • HIPAA - Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act
  • FERPA - Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act
  • PCI-DSS - Payment Card Industry Data Security Standard

Some data is considered directory and public information, which can be viewed by the general public, unless a specific request is made to make such information private. To help all of us understand how to handle the various data types in a safe and compliant manner, CaTS has created a reference document, which can be found at https://wrightstate.service-now.com/kb_view.do?sysparm_article=KB0010407.

CaTS highly recommends reviewing the document and double checking your processes to make certain they comply with the various regulations we are subject to as a university.

If you have any questions, contact the CaTS Help Desk at (937) 775-4827, or email helpdesk@wright.edu.
