Gerald “Mac” McFarland was born and raised in Springfield, Ohio. He graduated from Northwestern High School in Clark County. From 1965 to 1968, he served in the Marine Corps and is a Vietnam veteran. He attended Wright State University on a part-time basis for 10 years, studying education. Then he changed his major to nursing and attended Clark State Community College. He attended classes during the day and at night, and continued working at International Harvester, where he worked for 32 years. He was on the dean’s list while in nursing school, from which he graduated in 1993. He has been working for Mercy Health–Urbana Hospital ever since. He received the Outstanding Nurse Award from Mercy Health in 2018. Besides his great patient care, one of Mac’s greatest personal attributes is that he continues to serve as a member of the Marine Corps League Honor Guard. He actively participates in 21-gun salutes for veterans’ funerals in both Clark and Champaign counties. Mac currently works in Urbana Hospital’s Same Day Surgery department, where his peers note that he is an exceptionally dedicated, efficient, and precise nurse.
